We all have our go-to grocery store for everyday needs, and America has spoken about its all-time favorite of 2024.
Each year, USA Today releases its 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for various categories, including the best grocery stores in the U.S. Nominations are made by a panel of experts, and the 10Best editors select the finalists. Readers then get a chance to vote for their favorites, and this year, it may surprise you which grocer came in the lead.
Best Grocery Store in the U.S. in 2024 Hy-Vee was voted the top grocery store in America in 2024 by USA Today readers. This employee-owned chain is predominately found in the Midwest with over 280 stores, but it is best known for providing "a helpful smile in every aisle.”
According to USA Today, the store “works with farmers to provide locally grown fruits and vegetables, and many of the locations offer food counters with colossal salad bars and items like meatloaf, Asian food, pizza, and fried chicken,” which could be why this is such a popular choice among shoppers today.
While Hy-Vee took the top spot, here's a look at the full list.

There are so many regional stores that how can you pick a single best? Maybe if they did regional contests it would be more meaningful. I’ve only HEARD of two on the list and only shopped at one - Trader Joe’s.

Why would Trader Joe’s be at the top of the list? It has limited grocery selections, disappearing stock items, and many items becoming much more expensive.
Fresh Market??? Better bring your OWN grocery cart full of CASH...and plenty of it!
I worked at Hy-Vee in the 1970s. I remember the big deal it was when they opened their 100th store.
It’s a lot like Publix. Employee owned. Clean and friendly. Profit sharing with their employees.
Here in Jacksonville, we have The Fresh Market, Aldi’s, Publix, Winn Dixie now owned by Aldi’s, Super Walmart, and Trader Joe’s although I’ve shopped at all of them, Publix is the one we shop 90% of the time
We also had our inside jokes.
Their slogan was “There’s a Helpful Smile in Every Aisle.”
We would jokingly say, “There’s a helpless frown on every clown.”
Or worse: “There’s a helpful whore by every door.”
26 miles to HEB. It’s 4 miles to Brookshire’s. 8 miles to Walmart.
Here in North Idaho, we have Safeway and a great little boutique store called “Pilgrim’s Market.” A Trader Joe’s is coming and it’s going in right across the street from Pilgrim’s Market. Pilgrim’s has a brand “MRH” which stands for “Made Right Here.” Their MRH produce and products are outstanding.
We also have another great regional store called “Super 1 Foods.”
We do most of our food shopping at HyVee, as one is located just 2 stop signs away from our home. But we tend to get all of our paper products, cat litter, butter.... some frozen entree dishes, etc. from Sam’s Club.
I am a big sale shopper, so tend to keep good track of the prices on foods we regularly buy, and stock up when prices are lower than normal, as much as possible.
HyVee generally has very good service, and good quality fresh products.
Hy Vee is not for those on a tight budget. But it is well-run with more than usual selection. Hy Vee has very wide selection of takeout, usually good.
We tend to start at Aldi for basics, then to regional chain Fareway, and then what can’t be found can usually be at Hy Vee.

Our favorite is Publix Super Markets.
Everyone who works there knows the answer to any question you ask them.
Funniest encounter ever was my wife sent me shopping and on the list of items was “pine nuts.”
I asked a guy in produce if she wrote the item down wrong or if such an item did indeed exist.
He said, “Follow me. We keep them under the “pine peckers.”
Everyone in the checkout line was very worried over my laughing fit.
Be happy to have a choice. Kroger has a monopoly in our city, unless you want to drive half an hour to WalMart.
I went to a Hy-Vee once and was impressed.
Gelsons is just high priced.
Trader Joe’s is ok, but is a bit more a specialty store.
Aldi is owned by the same German company that owns Trader Joe’s. It’s great. Good selection, good quality, low prices (until Biden).
I never heard of the others either.
While I am sure it is not the “best” Chinese food, HyVee will occasionally have a buy one, get one for $1 or recently had for $6, a “two entree” Chinese meal. The portions are huge, and we can get two meals from each. Plus they are freshly cooked, right in the store.
Guido’s isn’t a chain but it’s pretty good.
At least they didn’t put Erewhon on the list.
Woodman’s is a small chain in Wisconsin and Illinois. It blows the doors off of the list for price and selection (although meat could be better).
Hy-Vee is good, too. Fresh Market is best in class. Don’t compare it to Kroger. Compare it to Sprouts and Whole Foods. The classical music and muted lighting helps with the ambiance.
