New questions are being raised over the Secret Service's protective capabilities after a gunman was spotted hiding in the bushes yesterday as former president Donald Trump played golf in Florida.
Agents opened fire on would-be shooter named as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh after eagle-eyed agents detected him pointing a rifle through a fence lining Trump's private golf club in West Palm Beach a few hundred yards away from the president.
The FBI described it as an apparent attempted assassination on the GOP nominee.
While the Secret Service has been praised for its swift action in foiling the attempted attack on the presidential nominee, Trump's allies have said further measures have to be taken to protect him, with Republicans demanding that Trump receive the same security as President Joe Biden.
Trump's detail was beefed up significantly in the wake of another attempt on the former-president's life back in July, in Butler, Pennsylvania, with the secret service even pulling agents from President Biden's detail to bolster that of Trump's.
However, the fact that the shooter was able to get within 300 to 500 yards of Trump on Sunday has highlighted that issues exposed by the July shooting still need to be addressed, and the challenging task faced by Secret Service to protect him.
New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, the House Republican Conference chair and a close ally of the former president, said she was grateful Trump was safe.
'However, we must ask ourselves how an assassin was allowed to get this close to President Trump again?' she asked in a statement.

You would think they would be better shooters as well.
They fired shots at a guy and didn’t hit him?
How is that possible?
The USSS had a sniper team with eyes on the suspect and they didn’t take him out?
How is that possible?
In this instance, lets be glad they didn’t take him out
I'll take a lot of crap for this, but I kinda think they did their job this time. Or at the least, it wasn't gross negligence or worse like in Butler.
Local officials not holding back
From the presser an hour ago
Martin County Sheriff: “[The shooter] is not from this area, which raises the bigger question: How does a guy from not here get all the way to Trump International, realize that the president, former president of the United States is golfing and is able to get a rifle in that vicinity? I think that’s the question the FBI, the Secret Service are laser-focused on today: Is this guy part of a conspiracy?

Large security details give away the importance of a possible target.
Having your plane parked at the airport is an indication you’re in town.
Likely a very quick shot, and they may not have had a good view of the target because he apparently was behind some concealment. They took the hinky shot anyway to disrupt him and alert others to the danger. In a different context, you might call it suppressive fire.
Follow up question:
How did this loser know the presidents schedule, which course he would be on and about what time he would arrive at the spot where the assassin could perform his horrid deed?
Is it just me, or does this seem vaguely familiar with the Kennedy Assassination. If Oswald were a patsy and set up by the CIA by a cover story of going to the Soviet Union for a year, and going to Cuba, and then showing up at the Texas School Book Depository without knowledge of Kennedy’s route until the week of it. If the kill shots were from the Grassy knoll, how different it might have been had an aware Secret Service Agent notice the gun hanging out of a window and shot at it. Surely the shooters would have been scared off by those shots. And in the Trump Assassaination attempt, you have a useful idiot that has travelled to and spent time in Ukraine, had a prior history of gun violations, etc. Could the plan have involved a real sniper a thousand yards away, who would not have missed when Trump teed up his ball. I was in Dallas in 1963 and was aware of how much negative energy there was. Also, I knew the route because my Mother worked at an office bldg. that was just before he turned onto Commerce street. It seems VERY familiar to me, and I hope the FBI doesn’t bury it and actually find out the facts....Just sayin’.
The left and the swamp HATE Trump. The left hate him because they have been indoctrinated to hate him and the swamp because he threatens their little party. The shooter’s son apparently think it’s normal to hate him.
The hell it was. The shooter had ample time to string up body armor on the chain link fence as protection from the SS.
Trump needs to end the ego-stroking rallies that please thousands and focus on media-based marketing messages that will win over the votes of millions.
Democrats and MSM should be under fire for promoting violence through their harsh lies and propaganda.
This round of golf was not announced nor known to the public. Only those close to President Trump and the Secret Service knew. How did this shooter know to be there that day? Something stinks.
“How did this loser know the presidents schedule”
Internet
“, which course he would be on and”
one of only several possibilities
“about what time he would arrive at the spot where the assassin could perform his horrid deed?”
the emptied course was a clue
“...I kinda think they did their job this time...
Just the minimum. The averge shot for a trained sniper is around 600 meters or around 650 yards. The shooter was about half that distance.
Their followon to the situation may have been good, but like in Pennsylvania, their prep work was horrible. Their job is not to fend off an attack, but prevent it from happening. They didn’t do their job.

THe shooter followed the motor cade. It went to the golf course. He set up shop. No one told him anything.
Well, to be fair, Routh was standing behind a wire fence.
And because he was on the other side of a wire fence he was able to get away . He would have got away if not for the civilian who ID’d his car and plates
