One of the hallmarks of narcissism is that when things go wrong, it’s always someone else’s fault. Being a narcissist means never having to say you’re sorry. Nothing more perfectly illustrates this truism than an essay from yesterday’s Los Angeles Times blaming Republicans for California’s myriad woes. While the author is correct that, when Republicans had the chance, they didn’t make smart decisions, the reality is that it’s the Democrats who have led California to the desperate place it’s in now.
Steve Lopez’s essay doesn’t make the mistake of blaming Republicans for all the state’s problems. He concedes that Democrats have long controlled the former Golden State, which is plagued by homelessness, crime, out-of-control housing costs, and poverty.
He contends, however, “that none of that happened overnight, nor did it happen exclusively under Democratic leadership.” Lopez believes that Republican mismanagement during the times that Republicans controlled the government is as much to blame as Democrat mismanagement.
The easy challenge to that argument is that, since 1970, the legislature has had a Democrat majority, which became a vetoproof supermajority in 2018. Moreover, Democrats have held the governor’s office nonstop since 2011. For the seven years before that, the governor was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who ran as a Republican but governed as a Democrat. In other words, Republicans have had a shrinking say in California’s governance for decades, so it’s really hard to blame them for the current problems.
Nevertheless, Lopez makes a valiant effort. I’ll quickly go through what he gets right and what he gets wrong and then wrap up with all the awful Democrat policies that have truly brought the Golden State to its knees.

Republicans have as much control over California political and economics policies as a crippled flea has over the direction of the rhinoceros it’s riding
“The marxists try to blame others. I am (not) shocked.”
The Marxist Democrats, Satan’s minions, always lie and blame others. Their ‘father of lies’ compells them to do so.
The Los Angeles Times is responsible for CA woes!
Its true! Pansy ass republicans have been getting their ass kicked in Cali for decades, they have zero power, I blame the party as well for not fighting the leftist ilk that has destroyed California!
marijuana
California is a one party state. Republicans control NOTHING and haven’t for years. This is all on the Dems
And the LA Times blames who?!?!
That is a special brand of psycho right there. Absolutely crazy.
Or is it the Republicans fault? They aren’t doing enough to stop the democrats from passing their crazy agenda. If the Republicans weren’t in the minority, they could stop the democrats. Therefore, it’s those Republicans who are to blame for not stopping the democrats from doing what the LA Times fully supports.
This is just silly!
What about Arnold Schwareneggar, Gov. from 2003 - 2011?
I've never been to California, but I pay attention to
what's going on over there. The way California is circling
the drain now it looks like it might not be a good
idea to visit there like I hoped I would someday.
(And I don't think Arnold was a was a particularly good
governor much less a good Republican governor.
RINO to Republican-light if anything.)
Yep it’s the pubs fault. They should pay at the baIIot box next time. Oh wait. /extreme sarc.
Schwarzenegger had some good ideas, but his effort to implement them was half-hearted and he soon gave up. His wife, one of the Kennedys, probably influenced his thinking. Nonetheless, he vetoed some of the crazier bills that came across his desk, such as one that awarded driver’s licenses to illegal aliens.
It’s California Jake
Well, we don’t refer to it as the UniParty for nothing.
I’m offended that weird friggin’ Cauliphonya RATS are blaming all their screw ups on me and other Republicans.
