It is an interesting and somewhat macabre parlor game to play at a large gathering of one’s acquaintances: to speculate who in a showdown would go Nazi. By now, I think I know. I have gone through the experience many times—in Germany, in Austria, and in France. I have come to know the types: the born Nazis, the Nazis whom democracy itself has created, the certain-to-be fellow-travelers. And I also know those who never, under any conceivable circumstances, would become Nazis.

Fascinating read; and a note of how far periodicals have fallen.
Interesting description of types.

*PING* to an 80-year-old magazine piece, strangely topical.

The author has it all wrong. Sure, some of the people she mentions would "go Nazi" and some would not. But a great many Germans "went Nazi" because they believed what they were told by the German government, controlled by the Nazi machine.
I highly recommend the book: They Thought They Were Free.

I didn’t see the publication date listed, but from comments in the article it must have been written between the fall of France and the establishment of Vichy France, and the attack on Pearl Harbor. So between July 1940 and November 1941. I would guess late 1940 before the inevitability of conflict with Germany had become apparent?

Silly me, now I see you posted it in the OP. August 1941. So much for pinpoint accuracy, but at least I was over the target!

The alternative in 30s Germany was Communism. The Weimar government was very weak.
