A US Navy leader was demoted for installing an illegal WiFi network on a warship, a new report says.

Grisel Marrero installed a Starlink network on the USS Manchester and named it "STINKY."

She lied to and misled her commanding officer at least three times when questioned about the network, per the report.

A senior US Navy enlisted leader who was demoted after she was caught running illegal WiFi on a warship used a leadership association's debit card to pay for its monthly bills and named it "STINKY," according to a new report.

Grisel Marrero, who was the command senior chief of the USS Manchester, installed and operated the unauthorized network during a deployment in 2023, lying to her commanders and falsifying records to cover up its presence, according to a Navy charge sheet seen by Business Insider.

That’s the worst part.

How did this originally go unnoticed? Here is Starlink’s maritime/mobility install instructions:

https://starlink-enterprise-guide.readme.io/docs/maritime-install-guide

Looks to me she is too fat to climb the yard arm to install the system herself. Somebody helped install the rogue network. Amazing, she should have busted down to E1 and given a bad conduct discharge along with other chief petty officers that sanctioned/used her private network..

Instead of “STINKY”, she should have named it “Kobayashi Maru”. Get a commendation for original thinking!

It’s a bit of a side point, but she’s got more ribbons than Bull Halsey.

She doesn’t seem to understand anything about what her purpose as a sailor and then NCO leadership and its role in the Navy and to her combat ship was, no concept of mission.

She probably looks great on paper, does well in complying with the peacetime corporate like standards of a big organization, but has no concept of the mission of war, and no interest in it.

There are now many tens of thousands of ‘managers’ and enlisted like her in the military today, women checking boxes, liking the uniforms and structure and order, and the easy to attain praise and administrative recognition of a peacetime military, the pleasant people around her who are easy to manage, but are women with no concept or desire for what they are all waiting for and preparing for.

Why is she still in uniform? Demoted my @ZZ! she needs to be court martialed and given a dishonorable discharge for what she has done. To get off relatively lightly I figure she must be an alphabetsouper.

She was promoted which denied a deserving person the promotion. Why try? Just gotta have the right skin color and plumbing.

Commisioned officers have always been infiltrated with idiots, but the Chief Petty Officers could be counted on to keep things going. The Navy and Coast Guard are in trouble.

Yep. We see this sort of thing everywhere today. Very light punishment might seem like the humane thing to do. But it demoralizes good people and takes away restraint from fence-sitters who are thinking about breaking the law.

Steal from a store, and get a mild slap on the wrist. So why not steal again? Meanwhile some poor slob in the checkout line is wondering why he should spend his last $20 on grocery items. Why not just walk out?

Much worse than running a still. WiFi is a security risk.

Also, I can run a simple program on my laptop and see every WiFi network within hundreds of yards. Wut? No one on the ship could do the same to confirm an unapproved network?

The Navy and Coast Guard are in trouble.

From the top down.

Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro violated federal law by endorsing President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign and criticizing former President Donald Trump while overseas, the U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC) said Thursday.

The article mentions that, she belongs in prison.

“When junior sailors and commanding officers began noticing the WiFi network, Marrero denied its existence, according to Navy Times.

Marrero’s charge sheet said she lied to her commanding officer on at least three occasions from July to August 2023, telling them each time that there was no WiFi onboard.

Later, she changed the network’s name from “STINKY” to something that sounded like a wireless printer, although there were no such printers on the ship, Navy Times wrote, citing the investigation.

The Starlink dish was eventually discovered on August 18 by a civilian installing a separate, authorized satellite communication system.”
