No, Churchill Did Not Instigate WWII Against Hitler

Tucker Carlson recently had Darryl Cooper on his podcast to discuss history. The most prominent talking point of Cooper, a historian of sorts, was the ostensibly avoidable nature of the Second World War. It’s not a new thesis; there has always been an American polemic that the United States’ involvement in WWII was unnecessary and unwinnable. Charles Lindbergh and the 1930s America First movement did not think the United States’ involvement was inevitable. A long and often-times inconsistent tradition of Anglophobia convinced many Americans—Lindbergh being the most notable—that Great Britain was tricking the United States into a war it had no stake in. What makes Cooper interesting, and worrisome, is the way he sees Winston Churchill as a primary aggressor in the Second World War instead of the nakedly genocidal, tyrannical, and racist Führer of Germany, Adolf Hitler. Churchill’s warmongering—if one insists on calling it that—was in the defense of the conservative and even nationalist European system against Nazi imperialism.

Look up the Destroyers for Bases deal of 1940. Many of those ships sinking U-Boats were American destroyers given to the British who desperately needed them for convoy escort.

The Anti-Comintern Pact was useless, as Hitler figured out. Hitler actually offered membership to Poland, who declined, as they already had non-aggression treaties with both Germany and the USSR, who both invaded them.

Britain had a treaty obligation with Poland although they never sent troops when Poland was attacked. And yes Churchill knew that he needed the US in the war, which Hitler made certain by declaring war against the US himself. Long before any cities were firebombed.

There is no way anyone sane can make a case that Hitler didn’t envision, prepare for, and start the war in Europe. Blaming Churchill or the US or the West in general is borderline psychotic. Also, stupid.

True, Hitler did actually want Poland as an ally, he admired Marshall Piłsudski. So much he attended a memorial service for Piłsudski, and had an honor guard placed at his tomb in Kraków when the Germans invaded Poland.

What do you think would have happened if the Nazis got control of the Royal Navy, with Japan breathing down our necks in the Pacific?

To play the "what if" game, what if the Nazis had control of the formidable French Navy, instead of it being destroyed in North African anchorage, while the Vichy regime negotiated with the Nazis?

Churchill was roundly criticized for ordering the destruction of the French navy at anchorage, with hundreds of French navy casualties, who had recently been allies.

I don’t know a ton about you, I just see you attacking Churchill, defending Hitler and saying we were lied to about WWII. There are a fair number of possible explanations for why someone would do that, but that’s definitely the sort of thing a Nazi would do.

I’m an infantry vet of 3 tours. I know the power of propaganda. Hitler was nuts, I did not defend him. I’m saying you’ve been lied to about everything you think you know and people need to question everything. Bible is a good. You can use the Bible as a lens to view things, it helps greatly.

In WWII we worked with history’s second biggest killer ever to destroy history’s third worst killer ever to our own ends

It was complicated and ugly and not always “binary”

Cooper arguably investigates historical events more in depth than anyone in recent memory

I’m talking podcasts that make a Faulkner audiobook seem like O’Henry lol

And he assumes some sympathy or understanding of the motivations of all the players even the bad ones and he admits that as he did with Tucker

Last night he did not elaborate on Hitlers complete designs no question of that

But I’m (unlike my best friend here) not sure he’s a cloaked David Duke yet and I sure don’t think Tucker is

I’ve seen Cooper repeatedly laud Jewish accomplishments and say they deserve a homeland and give history of Zionism a fair shake

He of course gives the Arabs a fair shake too which aggravates folks here especially the rapture mascot gang

I sure don’t agree with his Churchill take and I don’t think Tucker did either though Tucker usually just lets folks talk

My main takeaway both were kind of out of gas over was how did we win WWII only to start giving it all away immediately and end up where we are now

It’s a much smaller world
