I’ve done a LOT of manufacturing systems and automation design. Whenever I came across a product in the past few decades that somehow failed well short of what I thought it’s lifespan should have been, I attributed it to whatever third world country produced it.
Well in hindsight, especially with what I’ve learned here in the past few years, it’s clear that the increased shortening of equipment and product lifespans is a carefully planned thing. Japanese automobiles have long been designed to the “bathtub curve”, where you might see an initial failure of a part or two within the first 3-6 months of owning the vehicle (even that’s been reduced though), but at the end of the vehicles intended lifespan when one part goes then you can expect many parts to start failing soon afterward, as there are a lot of technical people that pay attention to making parts meet specifications and not a bit past that.
Today when you buy a consumer product, unless you purchase it for nearly 2-3x from a “known good (cabal) brand”, you can expect some sort of inherent failure in short order. For example I had an electric shaver with a removeable cord. Well it didn’t take long (maybe a year or two) for the connection of the cord to become intermittent depending on how I turned the shaver to start my days off with some not so “Bigg Red” friendly words.
Said connection was dealt with using wire cutters, a soldering iron and a bit of electrical tape. Hasn’t been an issue for the past decade.
Once we’ve removed the upper level pricks that make decisions to intentionally work against us, I very much look forward to letting loose skilled honest manufacturing people. They can both re-teach our youth about something called “old school”, coupled with technologies intentionally withheld from us. The future looks very bright indeedy.
