“Suicide” knobs on the steering wheel?
“Wrist twist swivel ( steering wheel ) system”
That’s (I think) what we called a suicide knob.
I once bought a '66 MGB as a hobby car. My mom expressed her concern that I'd be thrown from the vehicle if I were to get in and accident. I told her the chances of getting thrown out of the vehicle were minimal since I'd likely be impaled by the steering column.
Incorrect. Modern vehicles are built with force absorbing crumple zones, which significantly reduce impact to people and injury/death.
My youngest son was hit head-on by a drunk driver in a Ford F-150, while my son sat at a stop sign.
The crumple zones and airbags on his 2019 Toyota Corolla SAVED HIS LIFE. He escaped the car with a few bumps and bruises. It's a miracle he's alive.
That would never have happened in a vehicle from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, or 90's.
I have a picture of my youngest son on top of his vehicle after it was towed to the junkyard. It was completely unrecognizable.
Yes, I helped him buy another Toyota Corolla. I drive a Tacoma myself. Toyota fans for life.
Incorrect
High speed crashes are just as deadly in a new an an old car the check the stats and obits the safety devices are more for slower in town crashes.
Bonus round check out junk yards and note all the blood in the newer cars they didn’t live.
LOL...poor Mom!! You really comforted her. How did she take that?
The difference is that cars are made to absorb energy.
Only to a degree when they hit a tree many still get hurt
Breakaway steering wheels, and properly placed airbags and seat belts, that was all within the purview of consumer choice, instead of regulation. I HATES regulations.
They covered the Pinto............
Those were after-market items, IIRC........
Which would include the Mustang II as it’s built on the Pinto frame... er.... unibody.
She rolled her eyes. She knew me well enough to know she should have expected that sort of response :)
LOL...the old “Mom eye-roll!” We all know it well.
That is true. Detroit hasn’t figured out a way to outengineer stupidity and never will.
Bingo
Some photos of older vehicles going back in time.
