Toddler Mistakenly Served Alcohol at Salinas Restaurant

A Hollister family is urging parents to be cautious after their 2-year-old daughter was mistakenly served alcohol at a Salinas restaurant, resulting in a trip to the emergency room.

The family was at a large family dinner at a local Salinas restaurant, Fujiyama Japanese Restaurant, when their 2-year-old daughter was mistakenly served alcohol, resulting in a night at the emergency room.

The parents ordered apple juice for their daughter’s drink, but it was not until their daughter started showing signs of intoxication that they realized the juice cup she had been drinking had house-made cooking wine inside.

It was then served inside a normal juice cup with a lid. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until later, when the toddler's behavior became alarming.

The parents immediately noticed something was wrong and tasted the drink themselves, realizing it was wine.

"She was swaying, she was falling over, she was leaning on walls, she couldn’t hold her head up, she was slurring her words," mom Noemi Valencia said.

The parents spent the night at Salinas Valley ER. They said a blood test revealed an alcohol level of 0.12% in their daughter’s system.

KSBW 8 spoke to the manager of the restaurant who said it was a mistake. The wine was being stored inside a large container labeled "apple juice" when their server made the mistake.

Salinas police did confirm with KSBW 8 that there was a police report filed on Aug. 17, 2024, for the incident and that they are looking into the matter.

"Take proper precautions and how you store things or label things properly so that this doesn't happen to anybody else," Valencia said.

The little girl has since sobered up and fully recovered.

Her parents are grateful the situation wasn't worse and urge other parents to taste what is served to their children.

"Parents: taste what's served to your kids," they said.

The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control gave the following statement:

“The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is aware of the reports and is working with local authorities to investigate.”

We were at a restaurant and the server set down the fries and dips. Wife’s friends kid grabs a fry and plunges into one of them. Jalapeno ranch dip. Stuff was hot even for me. Kid is SCREAMING his mom is yelling at the waiter all hell breaks loose. I went to the bar and hid until it settled down. Felt bad for the kid even tho he is kind of a bratty 10 year old. As they say “stuff happens “

My grandmother (and her sisters too) gave all their babies a little whiskey to ease teething discomfort

I got over-the-counter opium. It worked.

It has probably changed now, but in Texas the parents decided if a kid could drink or not when in an alcohol establishment, if you bought your 4 year old a beer, then so be it.

We were at a grade school basketball tournament in OKC in the 90’s. 9 girls, 25 parents and siblings at a Mexican restaurant. Girls all ordered virgin daiquiris. They delivered real ones. We found out real soon. The restaurant comped the entire bill.

She then swore she'll never do it again after getting a good look at the 2 year boy she was hitting on while under the influence.

Since I was a little kid and into adulthood with my own toddler, that is how I understood the law.

Wine with food. Although one of my grannies would spike the eggnog and sluice the fruitcake at Christmas. Also chocolate shakes and Dr. Pepper floats were spiked as well.

I was wondering how they knew what toddler intoxication looked like. Yikes...

Just avoid towns named Salinas. In the town of that name in Kansas I once arrived after midnight at a hotel where I had reserved a room. The clerk checked me in, mentioning he was switching from a 2-Queen to a King room, which was fine since I was alone.

Then the most ludicrous hotel experience I'd ever had ensued. I went up to the room and found it trashed as if there had been a party in there. The bed linens were all over, there were soft drink cups littering the counters, the towels were wet and filthy and lying in the shower, everything was a mess.

Well, OK, mistakes happen. So I went back down to see the clerk about changing rooms. Except that the clerk wasn't there. And wouldn't pick up the phone. And calling the main hotel # wouldn't patch through to anyone. I wandered through all the halls, peaked in the managers office and employee-only areas, laundry, etc. and the bathrooms. Nowhere. Went outside and scouted all around the property thinking he was having a smoke or dope or something. Nowhere to be found.

Went back inside and started hollering rather loudly in case he was in some other room. No dice. By this time it was well past 1 AM and I was getting ticked. After 45 minutes of fruitless searching I gave up, went up to the trashed room, wrapped myself in the cleanest linens I could find and went to sleep. Couldn't even shower due to the lack of a usable towel.

In the morning, the hotel staff were nowhere to be found. Good grief! Just turned in my card and left. The only solace I got was that when I reached out to the corporate phone line for the hotel, and the hotel points club I use, both separately gave me free nights' stays and the charge for my nightmare night was refunded.

When my 8th-grade son, who was in military school, came home to visit, we went out to a restaurant. My son ordered a Roy Rogers and when it arrived, he said it didn’t taste right. It turned out that the waiter thought he was in the military (due to his school uniform) and had served him a Rob Roy. All was well when my husband drank it.
