Climate change is already reshaping PNW shorelines. Tribal nations are showing how to adapt

SHORES OF THE SALISH SEA, Tulalip — Keeley Chiasson plodded through the steep, sandy sediment near the base of the bluff. Carefully perched on a firm shelf, she scraped back the weathered surface of the wall, revealing stripes of cocoa, rust and tan sediments.

These layers may reveal clues about the history of this place and could inform communities here on how to adapt to a changing climate.

When factoring in variables including groundwater, wave action, material strength and vegetation cover, Chiasson and other researchers can unearth answers to how quickly a rising sea and stronger storm surges will gnaw away at these coastal bluffs.

Wait. It’s possible to adapt to climate change? Impossible!

No.

I live quite near the Puget Sound, and NOTHING has occurred here.

No sea level rise, nothing.

This article can’t be true. It refers to Chiasson as a mere ‘researcher’, not an ‘expert’. /sarc

"Tribal nations are showing how to adapt."

Yeah, by opening casinos and selling tax-free cigarettes. As for "climate change" reshaping the coasts, when HAVEN'T climate change and seismic activity been reshaping the coasts and everything else? I live less than two miles from Puget Sound, and there are cliffs there that were formed by a major earthquake just a few hundred years ago. Many of the north-south valleys in my area were formed by massive ice flows during the last ice age that ended10,000 years ago.

The San Juan Islands - home to numerous Indian tribes - are a relatively recent geological development. But why go back that long? 40 years ago, Mt. St. Helens blew its top in a matter of minutes.

Sand....There’s a local beach with an exposed cliff that has strata dating back about 44 million years. They’re canted at about 45 degrees. On top, are horizontal strata. Rooted below the high tide mark are a couple of old cedar stumps. They’re there because there was a massive earthquake 300 plus years ago, and the ground sank. Sand gets moved around all the time. The parking lot has been in the same place for 50 years, that I know of. The campground doesn’t seem in danger of flooding...at least not from the ocean side. It gets pretty soggy every rainy season.

When you people fabricated the term “climate change” in the way you did, your problem was you didn’t know or understand the great lack of intelligence in your scheme.

Does the Seattle Times think that all of the sand on the beaches was trucked in from Home Depot?

It’s only possible to adapt if you seek the guidance of the oppressed and all-wise indigenous people.

The shore line keeps changing due to tides, wind erosion oh and an earthquake or two. The earth is not static
