Waltz was not in a First Sergeant Billet either. He was a detachment NCOIC. Thus his DD Form 214 states he retired as a Master Sergeant/E-8. He was never a first sergeant.

I was AF. Furst Sergeant could be a lower rank. Ours was usually an E-6 as I recall. Sort of a gopher for the Squadron Commander and Squadron NCOIC. As a practical matter, he ran herd on everyone. If someone needed bailing out of jail at 2 AM, the First Shirt got the call.
