Hondas
Wore out a 750 single-cam.
Wore out a Gold Wing. Couple of years in Germany with it didn’t help....
Cross-country runs:
Phoenix AZ to Norfolk VA.
Norfolk to Little Rock AR. Yeah, short run.
Little Rock to Phoenix AZ to Charleston NC with a side-trip to Kansas. Got snowed on for this run. Fun Stuff.
Chicago IL to Norfolk VA to Las Vegas NV.
Thinking about getting back up. Harley won’t be on the list.
I just traded in my 2015 Honda Shadow Phantom 750 which I loved for a pretty red Can Am Rt limited. I never had one problem with the Honda, not one. It ran great, every time. I got a good trade in price for a 9 year old bike in pristine condition. I loved that bike so much I worry about it. I hope it finds a nice home and won’t be abused. I hope it ends up on a farm. That would be nice.
When people ask me why I don’t have a Harley (my wife does have one) I tell them I don like working on motorcycles................
they are going to have to buy a whole new black t-shirt wardrobe
Har. Good one. However, Harleys leaked even before AMF. So what? I'd get some degreaser to clean the garage floor and wipe where the primary seal was leaking.
As a on and off Harley rider, I've seen the worse and the best of the brand. The pre-AMF flatheads, knuckleheads, panheads, even Shovelheads leaked oil. Again, so what, I was riding a Harley with the awesome vibration and sound from the pipes. Riding a Harley was a treat.
Sold my 1100 Honda Shadow 2 years ago, it was a great bike. Bought a Yamaha jet ski instead. True freedom not confined to the road, and no teen texter can kill me even if they tried.
Sorry I just don't trust other drivers, too many close calls over the years.
I’m a member of an old man motor cycle club here in Sun City Hilton Head. There are a few guys who have the tools and skill to do some serious fixes on their Harleys. Impressive guys. One guy brags about how he negotiated for a maintenance manual when bought a new bike. I’m just an operator. The main theme of the Harley talk is that the quality of manufacturing and design has declined. There are a lot of flaws.
That said, I bout a can Am trike so I don’t fall over. The Can Am contingent of the club has already told me of what to expect to fail AFTER I bought bike. Thanks a lot.
When I worked for a large motel chain we were told “Never rent a downstairs room to a person riding a Harley. They all leak oil and if they take the motorcycle into the room at night it will ruin the carpet.”
Most people I know getting Harleys are “mid-life crisis” or retirement. Like you said, never really been a young man’s bike.
Well, that may be true, but plenty did, do much so, that Bud Light dropped from Number 1 brand to 10 for a few months. I know, they may have bounced back now, but the boycott did serious damage to their income for many months.
Let me know what your next major purchase is, so I can be sure to short their stock...
Riding a Harley was a treat. Agreed.
I used to own a ‘92 FXRP. Police edition of the FXR. FAST off the line. Good cruiser. Used to ride the back roads of eastern Mississippi and western Alabama.
Then I had kids. Need the money.
Blech beer and Harley motorcycles are two different things.
“Let me know what your next major purchase is, so I can be sure to short their stock...”
I’m never buying anything ever again.
“My next Bike will be an Indian.............”
My son was thinking about an Indian but Harley gave him what appeared to be a pretty good deal and I believe a pretty good bit less than an Indian. He got a 2013 Heritage Softail(but brand new still on the sales floor). They gave him $6000 for a Sportster he had just bought for $3000 and the final price was about $14000. I think they gouged him on the interest, though.
Hence, Harley owner’s motto: “Harley Davidson. Making mechanics out of motorcycle riders for over 100 years.”
Early Harleys were designed to leak to purify the oil, viz. the rider had to frequently add fresh oil.
FXR/EVO was the best bike harley ever made ... and I’ve owned plenty ...
The local Harley dealer was offering some really good prices on their bikes BUT ONLY IF YOU FINANCED THEM THRU HD FINANCE.
I told them I was paying cash and had no need for finance the bike.
Then I couldn’t get the special price.
I walked out and have never been back...............
