Indeed it is not pleasant. IMHO, the reason for it is to SAVE FACE FOR NASA AND BOEING over the poor job Boeing has done in designing and building their Starliner space capsule. Again IMHO, they really should swallow their pride and ask Elon Musk’s SpaceX for assistance.

But what part is "truly horrifying"? The ISS has been manned for years with many long endurance stays by crewmembers. At worst, it is an inconvenience.

The writers of this story are inflating every aspect to some kind of life and death struggle.

Astronauts covet time in space. For them being told your one or two week mission has been extended to 6 months is like you or me being told you have to extend your Greek island vacation another 3 months. Twist my arm.
