The monster special needs student who pummeled his teacher after she took his Nintendo Switch has been sentenced to five years in a Florida state prison.
Brendan Depa, who was 17 at the time of the beating, tackled teacher's aide Joan Naydich, 59, in February 2023 and unleashed dozens of punches to her body and head, leaving her seriously bruised and unconscious.
Depa, who is 6'6' and 270 pounds, has become a legal adult since the brutal attack he perpetrated at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, Florida, a moderately sized town near Daytona Beach.
He pleaded no contest to the aggravated battery charges against him October and was originally due to be sentenced in May 2024, but the judge delayed the hearing so he could hear from more witnesses.
Arguably the most crucial testimony came from Naydich herself, who told the court: 'Brendan Depa's actions that day has caused me to lose a job that I had for almost 19 years, lose my financial security, lose my health insurance.'
Naydich, a mother of two, has previously called for her teenaged attacker to be locked up for the maximum sentence of 30 years.
But the decision from Judge Terence Perkins to give Depa 25 years less than that could have do with the exculpatory testimony that came from his mother and arguments from his defense team.
Leann Depa, his adoptive mother, said she had warned the school about her son's laundry list of triggers.
According to her, 'electronics' was his biggest trigger.
'I had told the school that being hungry was a trigger, that noise was a trigger, that being told no was a trigger, that being corrected in front of other people was a trigger, and electronics was a huge trigger,' she said on the stand.

She is suing. Sounds like the district really is screwing her over compensation wise and otherwise. I don’t know if the group home is named or not...
The name of the school—Matanzas—might be a clue to a student who understands Spanish.
“Matanzas” means “Slaughter”.
It is also the name of the town where the last AmerIndians remaining in Cuba were slaughtered to the man.
At 6’6’ and 270 pounds, that would feed a lot of starving cannibals in the democrat plantation.
Short Buses are built for a reason.
Kra$h HerAss.
“I’m convinced kids like this don’t need to be in public schools. They should be in their own special schools like in the past.”
So true. I don’t understand why they ever decided to integrate the way they did. Was it a financial thing? Was it to improve self esteem for the kids? It’s just dangerous, and holds back the kids without those issues.
“With any luck he will kill a useless criminal in prison and get life...”
Life (in prison)...finds a way (to stay in prison).
“...He will learn in the prison the meaning of the word no...”
He’s 6’ 6” and as strong as a Sasquatch. Other inmates in prison will be calling him “Sir.”
There is nobody so big and strong and mean that they cannot be taken out in a prison, if a prison leader means to take them out. The most important in a prison setting is respect and he will learn that in the prison setting, which is unfortunate. However, he wasn’t willing or able to learn that beforehand.
He shouldn’t be in prison. He should be in a state hospital. I want violent criminals behind bars, but this case is different.
Before you all flame away, read the background:
He has a severe mental disability. He was living in an institution. His parents didn’t put him in school. The state did.
And he’s the THIRD special ed student in that school system who attacked an aide. The other two were NEVER sent to prison, even though they were older.
More details here: https://flaglerlive.com/depa-disparities/#gsc.tab=0
None of these students should ever have been put in the school system.
Here’s more info on Brendan Depa’s case: https://flaglerlive.com/brendan-depa-my-son-story/#gsc.tab=0
To summarize:
Brendan’s (adoptive) parents homeschooled him because of his problems. When he grew big and strong, they could no longer handle him, so they put him in “long-term hospitalization.” But, the insurance company forced him out, and the state took over his case. The state puts these patients into group homes. The group homes use the public school special ed programs as “day programs.”
So, the state placed Brendan in a group home and a special ed program, despite his parents’ objections.
Again, he’s the THIRD special ed student who attacked an aide there. The other two were sent right back to their group homes. But, he’s been sentenced to prison for five years?
None of them should be in prison or group homes or special ed programs. They should be in state hospitals.
In Texas, a teaching assistant died three days after she was attacked by a special ed student, but no one is talking about that case.

Bring back the state institutions.
State institutions won’t put butts in the seats in publik skrewls.
Fewer butts in the seats mean less funding.
That kid was in that school because publik skrewl bureaucrats and the union were willing for the shilling.
There’s only kne thing that will fix this: more parents refusing to send their kids to publik skrewls.
“Over time, from a low standard, such kids tend to gradually learn impulse control”
That would be a great accomplishment. So many adults with high intelligence never achieve that.
Good point. The schools get more money that way. It’s all about money.
Institutionalized... special needs my ass. Bad parenting is at the top of my list.
Anyone with that many triggers belongs locked up or sent to Canada for self euthanizia.
I was a cub scout. It was a big day when I got my knife safety badge. I had one of those with a fork, knife and a spoon. This thing huge but wore it on my belt with pride to school
she should have home schooled him with so many triggers.
Being told NO? Life’s gonna be tough for her little prince.
In this case, they may as well be sentencing a zoo animal.
Brendan needs a fishing trip.
the teacher is a Karen.- respect my authority- SHE was a self entitled idiot to take a favorite playtoy from a huge Pit bull twice her size..
the school should have never let these 2 halfwitz get together.
unlike the teacher who got shot in Newport news, this teacher could see the tiger, and knew what it was capable of, yet still went into its cage and tried to tell the tiger where to sit and stay..
I'm guessing the teacher never was told no either.
Bambi vs Godzilla, place your bets...
IMHO the guy needs a psyche hospital. And prison will get him killed or worshipped.
Hopefully this “special needs” piece of crap gets a comeuppance in prison.
