Lady Gaga put on quite the show at the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony in Paris, but you know what it was missing? Pyrotechnics, headless women in a castle, and a boat carrying an opera singer. Enter: Gojira. The group became the first metal band to ever perform during the opening ceremonies. They were chosen because a) they’re French, and b) they put on a sick show.
The band — made up of vocalist Joe Duplantier, drummer Mario Duplantier, lead guitarist Christian Andreu, and bassist Jean-Michel Labadie — played a cover of “Ah! Ca Ira,” a song that was popular during the French Revolution. “It was a very bloody era of French history, so it was very metal,” Joe told The New York Times, adding that the band wanted to represent “the whole metal community on the world stage.” They succeeded — and found a new fan in Kelly Clarkson, who hosted the ceremony. “This is so cool,” she raved.
You can watch the performance below

…
According to Forbes, only a select few rock bands — let alone metal bands — have performed during the opening ceremony, including Kiss (2002); Alanis Morisette (2010); and Snow Patrol, The Who, Paul McCartney, and Muse, all in 2012. Could the Super Bowl halftime show be next for Gojira?!
This is not your teen-years metal.
First greeted by a headless Marie Antoinette, Gojira performed at the Conciergerie along the River Seine.
Gojira - isn’t that the Japanese spelling of Godzilla?
Demonic, and symbolic of the “burning” that’s a comin for these cretins that glorify bloodshed, violence and evil. Hell awaits them all.
Didn’t know that the Olympics are in Panem (Hunger Games).
Demonic rituals designed to usher in the age of the Antichrist, similar to rituals at CERN. Laviathan feeds the Beast and is hungry for human blood.
Yeah, that was kinda cheesy.
It was better than almost every Super Bowl halftime show for the past 20 years.
THIS ISN’T THE OLYMPICS I GREW UP WITH.
It is. I’m not aware of the band being overtly satanic or anything; they are overtly French.
After their opening ceremony stick in the eye jab at Christians the Paris Olympics are dead to me.
I was kind of hoping to see Plastic Bertrand do “Ça Plane Pour Moi”.
He’s Belgian, so...
Well after all, nothing screams “Olympics!” like a beheaded woman in a castle window. Somebody email me when this is over.
I have been a rock and music fan my whole life.
I’ve also been a Christian my whole life.
I do not deny that there are dark elements in music. And literature. And movies. And many art forms. And chemicals in the food supply. And the DNC.
There is an old saying, that when a Church is built the devil pitches a tent across the street. A saint once wrote that if demons weren’t transparent the sky would be blackened.
But one must guard against being scrupulous. Not every performance with blood etc is Beelzebub. These elements you cite in the Gojira performance hold for Wagner and AC/DC and Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden and a few horror punk bands like The Undead more, which (as far as I can tell) aren’t demonic. Especially Alice and Bobby Steele who are both religious guys. Really.
I would contrast this with the Commonwealth Games’ opener. Or any School Board meeting where parents are made out to be war criminals. Or the DNC. It’s night and day.
We have gone from the devil hiding in the shadows to him walking openly. He is the Prince of Lies, and his intent is to distort reality. Accordingly, we must crank up our discernment skills to avoid condemning everything.
Dr.Deth nailed it: I’m not aware of the band being overtly satanic or anything; they are overtly French. And while they may not be your cup of tea, I’ll take them over Beyoncé.
Yeah, well Rammstein has the best music to invade France to.
They’re one of the few bands that where I love the shock value and find them repulsive.
My idea of a good time does not involve a public display of fluid release.
But yes they could take France. And probably Belgium.
It was awesome!!! One of my favorite bands.
