Gruesome new details revealed of dog attack on Minnesota boy, 3, who's set to be taken off life support - with breed that mauled him so dangerous they're BANNED elsewhere in the world

Bystanders armed themselves with anything they could to fend off two pit bull mixes as they brought a boy to the verge of death.

A recent court filing disclosed the harrowing detail, as 3-year-old Minnesotan Covil Allen's fate is all but sealed.

The court document also revealed the dogs were not full pit bulls, but a mix between a pit and an American bulldog.

Known as American bullies, the dog's breed boasts especially powerful jaws that inflict more damage than those of any other breed.

This likely proved fatal for Covil, who remains in critical condition. His family has made the difficult decision to donate his organs when they decide to take him off life support, as they said he is not expected to survive. His mom was injured during the July 19 attack as well, but will recover.

'There were adults in the area that started to defend the three-year-old by using hammers and pick axes to get the dogs off the three-year-old,' the filing said following the incident on N. Brooklyn Park Drive.

First responders arrived and gave immediate medical attention to the boy, the filing added - describing how he was subsequently taken by ambulance to a hospital with 'critical' injuries.

Police Inspector Elliot Faust went on to write how the dogs were not only just American bullies, but those of 'the XL variety,'

He noted how 'this breed is banned in the UK,' despite them not being officially recognized as a specific breed.

And yes, they can be sweet and loving.

Anthropomorphizing. The aren't affectionate or sweet or loving. As pack animals they are expressing submission and loyalty to the pack alpha which is you.

Until it decides to challenge you. The problem is that they are far more likely to challenge children for dominance in the pack, if not outright attack them as prey.

Most domesticated breeds have had those traits minimized. But idiots have done the exact opposite. And even dumber people don't know that it has been done or are just willfully ignorant.

We live in the middle of nowhere. A few years ago a pair of dogs entered out property and started going around our home. I opened the door and one tried to get in. One was a mastiff of some sort, and tried clawing its way through a screen door. They just sat outside barking. I could not sleep.

I got out of bed went outside with a Judge and XD40 and went to work.

Here’s a clue: a very large proportion of the dogs in shelters ARE pibble crosses, because those *former* owners recognized they were incapable of handling such a headstrong beast. Unfortunately, weak-willed individuals think these are simple creatures, and do not train them properly.

There are also many shelter dogs that have been damaged beyond repair through neglect, maltreatment, poor (or non-existent) training, and are nearly unsaveable except by people that specialize in such creatures.

Once again, condemning an entire breed to death is something only eugenicists could support, and we all know what happened last time a eugenics-minded government got too powerful, don’t we?

“I don’t understand how anyone could own a pit bull when there are so many other dog breeds and shelter dogs who would love you to death for a home.”

Several years ago when my beloved Siberian Husky died I went looking for a new dog on Petfinder. Over half of them were pit bulls in shelters near me. Just the dog I did not want.

“WHAT was the father’s role - what did I miss?”

He was the father. The wife may have gone to purchase the cur, but he helped make that decision and should have had more sense and provided better judgement and direction. One can control a firearm, a bred fighting Bully... not so much.

Eleven deaths by dog attack in the US since June 22, 2024.
Eleven in 30 days is one death by dog attack (90% pit bull or pit bull variant) EVERY THREE DAYS.
Five of the deaths were owners of the dogs or friends or family.
Ten of the eleven culprits were pit bull/bullmastiff/bullyXL type dogs. One was a husky mix and one multiple-dog attack (5) had pits and Rottweilers.

A couple of years ago, I overheard a conversation in which a guy was talking about witnessing a mixed-breed pit bull attack a child in a stroller. This happened at a yard sale the previous day. To say he was disturbed would be an understatement.

He said the dog tore off part of the child’s face.

I didn’t feel it was proper to press for more details, so I don’t know if the child survived or if the dog was put down.

The dog should have been killed, and it’s owner should have been arrested and sued for every penny he or she owned.

What? You just make up your own version of the horrible story? Show where in the article it even mentions the father.

Note that the DM doesn’t mention that the UK’s so-called XL bully ban is a joke.

They left that part out for sone reason.

Go figure.

Sounds like backyard breeders to me and had no idea what they were doing and fully responsible for this horrible tragedy. My parents raised, bred and showed Bassett Hounds when I was young. My dad was an AKC judge. There is hardly a more docile dog than a Bassett. BUT when they had a litter of puppies their personalities temporarily changed, which is natural with ANY breed. They had a high criteria when clients came to the kennel to choose and handle a puppy, each were brought out separately and the mother was left with her other pups, that is because the mother could become aggressive protecting her baby. They also did not allow kids to handle the puppies.

I’m glad your daughter survived the latest dog attack. If she still has the pit, she is gambling with her life again.

I’ve been around and worked with dogs all of my life.
My advice to her; Get rid of the pit NOW unless she can find someone who has in-depth knowledge of dog behavior, and has obedience techniques.
She also needs to learn these techniques.
I would give the same advice to anyone before they get a dog.
As a side note, shock collars, beating, punishing your dog..... will backfire.

To: CodeToad; Organic Panic

CodeToad, organic panic may have said that poorly, but it is not wrong. I would suggest the poster should have said they are ALL potentially dangerous.

I have a personal experience which I believe indicates the accuracy of that.

I lived in Yokosuka, Japan when I was around 9, and took my brother’s spider bike out for a ride on some of the less traveled parts of that big Navy base there.

I rode down a deserted road with large hills on both sides covered with green vegetation. Stretching for hundreds of yards on either side of that two lane road were acres of chain link fence. In the fenced off areas there was a vast array of military equipment and machinery in various states of repair. There were fields of what must have been barrels for large naval guns. There were odd looking gray objects of all shape and condition that had been placed there and seemingly forgotten, rust spotting the paint, black hacked off cables protruding and laying on the ground. Launches and landing craft in long lines. Naval shells, 5”, 6”, 8” and even 16” shells.

As I pedaled along, I passed an area that was open all the way to the hills. I looked up, and saw a huge pack of dogs come running out of a cave, barking like mad, coming right at me from probably 100 yards away.

Those hills were honeycombed with tunnels. They had been meticulously boarded up by Seabees (I think) and walled off by large, stout, wooden structures with padlocked doors for access. They were impenetrable. I know this, because we tried. We were always trying to get into those caves. My brother and I almost got lost in one when we went inside with my dad’s spotlight that had an external battery you could carry on your shoulder, and you plugged the cigarette lighter connecter into it. We got a good way into that cave, and my brother dropped the light. Or I did...I don’t remember. But when that light hit the ground and went out, it was black. Completely, totally and absolutely black.

I remember, at that point, with a sharp pang of panic, that we did not have any backup light or matches. Nothing. My heart began to race as the panic rose up in me while we fumbled unsuccessfully in the pitch black to get the light going. I think we were both immediately convinced that the light had broken when it hit the ground, and we knew we were screwed. They would never, ever have found us. There were dozens and dozens of those tunnels, and we were hundreds of feet in.

My brother realized that when the light had fallen to the ground, the cigarette lighter connecter had jerked loose. He plugged it in, we got out, and never went back in any tunnels again.

Anyway, this tunnel on this more remote part of the base where I was riding my bike was either not sealed up or was open and had been inhabited by wild dogs. There were a good number of wild dogs, because military personnel had just left pets behind when they rotated out, and many of the animals became feral. At the time, I did not know this, and when this pack of dogs came running out of that cave towards me, I began pedaling with all my might to pick up speed.

However, the bike had a flaw that made it irritating in the best of times, and at this particular time, was particularly inopportune: when you really, REALLY pushed on the pedals to get going, sometimes the chain couldn’t stay on the sprocket, and it would come off, requiring you to stop whatever you were doing on the bike and put the chain back on. You know the drill. Get it completely on the small sprocket, part-way on the bigger sprocket, then you slowly turn the pedal and get it back on.

Well, when I put the pedal to the metal, you guessed it: the chain came off.

And then the dogs were immediately right on me.

As the first few dogs caught up, they began snapping at my legs, which I pulled up on the handlebars. This all took place in the space of about three seconds from the chain coming off.

I rapidly began to lose speed, and it was crystal clear to me that the bike was going to slow to a point, begin to wobble from side to side, and then fall over. And there was nothing I could do about it.

In a flash of inspiration, I realized my only option was the one I had to go for. I steered towards the nearest chain link fence and leaped off off the bike onto it. I clambered to the top and straddled the barbed wire across the top. It was really awkward, and I slid my bottom legs under the bottom strand and rested my torso on the top strand. (This wasn’t razor wire, it was the old style barbed wire)

The dogs milled wildly ten feet below me, standing on their hind legs as their front legs extended up the fence towards me. Later, my memory thinks there must have been fifty of those dogs, but I suspect it was a dozen or two at the most. I sat up on that fence for what seemed like an hour after the dogs left, I was too scared to come down.

When I did come down, I was terrified to take my eyes off the hill and put them on the bicycle chain to get it back on. I felt like if I even took my eyes away for a split second that when I looked up again, they would be rushing towards me again. When I did get the chain back on, I hightailed it out of there, sweating with panic the entire time.

I have to say that was probably the most frightened I have ever been in my life. I can’t say for sure what might have happened had they dragged me off that bicycle, but I can tell you, being pursued by a large number of growling, snarling, and barking dogs with bared teeth was a damned sketchy thing. But years later I found out why all those dogs were there from my mother, who apparently knew of the problem at the time. I was just an oblivious kid, but I swear those dogs meant business.

In reality - the inability to provide protection against attack. the the childs safety was indefensible. The real loser is the child.

Forethought would have indeed avoided this carnage altogether and together the couple failed. But ultimately the father fails, as the buck stops there.

“Don’t forget to buckle up.”
