Cranberry confirmed as natural remedy for UTIs

People who drink cranberry juice are 54% less likely to develop urinary tract infections (UTIs), according to a study.

It has long been suspected that cranberries contain compounds that help prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract, reducing the risk of infection.

However the effectiveness of cranberry juice has been confirmed by the network meta-analysis that amalgamated the results of 20 studies involving 3,091 participants worldwide.

Lead researcher Dr. Christian Moro said the findings could help reduce the use of antibiotics to treat UTIs.

"More than half of women experience UTIs and antibiotics are a go-to treatment prescribed by doctors," said Dr. Moro.

"With antibiotic resistance increasing, it is vital to identify effective non-drug interventions.

"Cranberry juice is an effective and easy intervention that should be considered for the management of UTIs."

The study also found cranberry juice reduced the need for antibiotics by 59%, and significantly reduced the symptoms of those with a current UTI.

Just drinking more water or taking cranberry tablets was also beneficial, although not to the extent of combining cranberry with fluid, such as in juice.

About 50% of women and 20% of men experience a UTI in their lifetime.

Me neither but colloidal silver works great.

So the medical community finally gets around to officially recognizing what has been known for decades.

And we’re supposed to be impressed with them or something?

Smart to do that. For a couple years before Mom died, my brother and SIL, who lived with her, learned to request that, too. The other tell-tale sign, aside from mental confusion, was falling down. Huge!

“...guess she was a good revenue stream.”

There ya go! Before D-mannose, it was a guaranteed trip to a doctor, labs, antibiotics. Now, Amazon delivers to my door. It isn’t 100% effective, but close.

Cranberries are great for UTI’s in many cases but if one is prone to developing calcium oxalate crystals cranberries are not recommended.

Okay. This has been known for years hasn’t it? I’ve always rushed to buy cranberry juice when I’ve felt a UTI was possibly starting. My Mom recommended it because her doctor recommended it. You can even buy cranberry pills that say on the label “to help and prevent urinary tract infections”.

Why do I suddenly see all the studies with new “startling” information on things I thought were already known?

Because of a high sugar count I stay away from juice. Take a cranberry supplement 168 mg twice a day.

UTIs in women can be insidious. My mother was hospitalized twice in the last year because of cognitive and behavioral issues. It wasn’t until a urine culture was done that a raging UTI was discovered. She was on intravenous antibiotics for a week until it cleared up.

My mother suffered from UTIs as well as she got older. The last one she had went undiagnosed for a couple of weeks. It took two rounds of two antibiotics to get rid of it.

I take one of these type of capsules a day and have had zero problems. Cranberry works but be careful with the juice as some are loaded with sugar.
