Tennessee store clerk caught on video stealing customer’s $1M-winning lottery ticket: ‘It’s pretty obvious’

A Tennessee gas station clerk was allegedly caught on surveillance video stealing a customer’s $1 million-winning lottery ticket — after lying and telling the winner they had lost.

The unidentified winner bought two $20 Diamond and Gold scratch-off tickets from 23-year-old staffer Meet Patel at a Shell station in Murfreesboro and handed him back the tickets to check, according to Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department.

Patel returned one of the winning tickets along with a $40 prize — while ignoring the fact that the other one had won $1 million, Lt. Detective Steve Craig told News Channel 5.

“He threw it on top of the trash,” Craig said of Patel, who then “took the trash outside” as the winner left. “If you follow him on the camera you can see him grab the ticket and put it in his pocket.”

Patel later “went to the Tennessee Lottery commission to claim the ticket as his own,” Craig said.

“Through their normal line of questioning, there were enough red flags” for them to investigate — easily finding the surveillance footage, the officer said.

That made it “pretty obvious” what Patel had done, Craig told the outlet with a chuckle.

If he didn’t sign the ticket, he has no recourse. Doesn’t matter what the camera says, lottery tickets are bearers of instruments. Anyone can claim an unsigned winning ticket.

I learned when selling commercial real estate in Seattle in the early 80’s that the more money that is involved, the more likely people are to try to find a fraudulent way to get their hands on it.

They actually wrote this in the article:

“The rightful winner, a father from Antioch, Tenn., will now finally get be his $1 million jackpot.”

They need new editors. Or maybe DEI has kicked in.

Yeah, but the story is he told the buyer that only one winner.
The buyer had two winners...

The buyer was robbed..
By the clerk.

We’ll let the buyer off with a warning. Don’t trust clerks to do the right thing..

Check it yourself

This has happened before and the lottery commission was only able to recover a portion of the winnings. The employee absconded to India with probably enough money to live in luxury for the rest of his life.

Always write your name on the back of the ticket!!!!!

Doesn’t matter, if it’s not signed you’re screwed. I agree with you on checking the numbers yourself.

If Americans knew how many of the GD foreign nationals commit fraud, they’d get whiplash from recoiling. No joke.

It did matter in this case.

The buyer is getting their 1,000,000 and the clerk got arrested for stealing it..

Amazing break that maybe only TN does this kind of investigation..

Handing the tickets to a clerk to check if they win with a lottery scanner isn’t a transfer of ownership to any sane legal system..

Dude, it was stolen via fraud.

If he didn’t sign the ticket, he has no recourse.

You say "recourse" as if he filed a complaint. He didn't. It was found by lottery investigators.
They made sure the ticket went to the right party.

Sounds like the ticket buyer was in possession, however briefly. I wouldn't expect him to sign the ticket before handing it back to check, though. Anyway, I always check lottery tickets myself, and on those rare occasions that I win a few bucks, they always check it in the machine when I turn it in.

If I read the article correctly, the guy who really bought it never got the chance to sign it.
