CLIFTON, N.J. -- Part of Route 3 remains closed in Clifton, New Jersey, after a truck apparently carrying hazardous materials crashed into a wall and exploded on Monday morning, killing the driver and melting the siding off homes on the other side.

The westbound side was reopened hours later, but CBS New York was told to expect to see crews working on the eastbound side into Tuesday morning as the investigation and cleanup continue

There was a propane truck accident in Spain in the 1970’s that killed over 200 people. There was an oil truck accident in Quebec in the early 2000’s that killed about 50. If terrorists want to make a score they would probably hijack a propane truck and drive it into a crowded school yard.

This was most likely just a tragic and unintended traffic accident.

Homeowner's insurance companies are going to revisit rates based on proximity to such highways that have hazardous materials transported along them.

If the hazmat truck is legit, they have beaucoup insurance. The homeowner's policy probably will not pay out a dime, unless they subrogate, i.e., pay the homeowner and then go after the trucking company themselves.

The insurers would look at the illegitimate hazmat carriers as well as insufficient road designs that expose homes to unnecessary risk.

Politicians can't keep jamming houses against roadways, or expanding roadways right up to houses, without dangerous results.

There are bridges and tunnels where certain HAZMAT are forbidden. One wonders why a HAZMAT truck was even allowed on that road. If it was legit.
