Cyprus: An island of two halves - with a bloody history still felt to this day
Sky News ^ | July 20 | MICHAEL DRUMMOND

For 50 years, Cyprus has been split in two by a military border, the constant reminder of a deadly conflict that has never been resolved.

The island, visited by more than a million Brits each year, is famed for its crystal clear waters, pristine beaches and rich culture, but the tiny country in the Mediterranean has a bloody history which provokes strong emotion to this day.

"We are lost souls," Greek Cypriot Mario Pischiris says. He was just a boy when war broke out in Cyprus on 20 July, 1974 - exactly 50 years ago.

He was forced to flee with his mother and brother.

Now 53 and living in London, the unsettled conflict in the country where he was born remains an emotional subject, as it does for thousands of Greek and Turkish Cypriots worldwide.

Turkish Cypriot Kenan Denizkan says the days after the 1974 conflict broke out were "the darkest week in the history of our island".

For some, today's 50th anniversary of the conflict is a painful one, for others it is a reason for celebration.

Another instance of Muslim imperialism.

No thanks to the UN, dividing the baby to this day. Separate into two groups who both agree on only one thing: that they hate each other.

The Greeks used to own all of what is considered Turkey today. This conflict goes way back.

At the time Bob Hope joked that “George Foreman is so tough, he takes his vacations in Cyprus.”

Colonialist Settler muslims should return to Arabia from which they launched their wars of conquest and leave Cyprus to its indigenous Greeks!

Many people have not looked at a map of Greece and Turkey. Greece has a bunch of islands that lie just off the coast of Turkey in the Aegean Sea. Very close. These countries are quite uncomfortable with each other and that affected the history of Cyprus 50 years ago.

I spent some time on the Greek side of Cyprus during the Israel- Lebanon conflict in the early 80’s.

Despite the war and actually being able to see smoke rise from strikes in Lebanon, had a very interesting and enjoyable vacation. Great seafood, friendly people, cheap wine.

First experience with so many topless women at the pool and beach. Wives and girlfriends of various UN troops on assignment. Memorable experience!

In one of his videos, about a year ago, Alex* actually went to the Turkish Side of Cypress.

*if you don’t know who Alex is, don’t bother posting here, as you are TOTALLY UNIFORMED.

I remember it. It was on the news almost every day but I did not have a TV at that time so read of it in the newspapers at the library. It was as usual between moslems and Greek Christians.

Just like a "two-state solution."

Regarding topless women. 1976, Nice, France, on the beach. Many western women sunbathing topless. Skin that had never seen the sun before. Way over cooked. Very sorry the next day.
