Kinda like dodging the assassin’s bullet?

For a while. But remember big customers demanded it to start with. They wanted those vulnerability fixes NOW. And they didn’t want their users to be able to override it. Now they’ll probably change their tune again. But it will change back a year or two later.

How about testing a new release on just one computer or a subset of computers and then releasing it company wide once it appears to be okay?

BTW, I am not an IT guy.

Nobody volunteers for beta testing.

I shouldn't complain. I feel like the character in "Jurassic Park" who says:

"It could have been worse, John.
It could have been a lot worse."

It sounds great, except nobody does it. That takes equipment and people and no company wants to do that. And the few that do turn into road blocks because they’re so slow to adopt. We’ve got a customer that never updates production until they tested it for 6 months, they wind up 4 versions behind and then they’re complaining they want to do X and we’re all “that’s in a version 2 up from where you are, try updating”.

Every aspect of every industry has the triangle. Fast, cheap or stable (or some other 3 conflicting goals) pick 2. And everybody really wants all 3, but that’s not possible.

there are going to be a lot of people wanting to sue that are schwab customers. Today is options expiration and we cant trade.

Options I bought yesterday on MSTR in the 65 area are now closing in on 200 and I can’t close them but they dont expire until next week.

People who bought them to expire today are going to be fuming especially if they dont have the money in the account to automatically exercise that option

Schwab can’t automatically sell that option at 2 pm because their system is down.

this is a huge trading disaster

I thought I heard this morning that they put out a software update that failed and couldn’t roll it back? I’m not sure if this is a conspiracy, it’s definitely a bit of incompetence. Plus, shame on companies for putting their businesses dependent upon external companies that they have no control over.

Many people are still confused, thinking this was caused by one of those “automatic Windows updates”. Although exceedingly annoying and most often ill-timed, this massive problem is not the result of Microsoft taking over control of a personal computer with one of their persistent Windows updates.

This is certain death for a software company

I highly doubt this. They are an elite cybersecurity firm and offer a cutting edge technology. I think they will be fine.

Is it a colossal screw up? - Yes Will it mean "certain death" for their company? - No

At they very least, they are too big to fail and will use their connections to weather the storm.

It is a crazy world and nothing is beyond them doing .
The next 4 months I’m going to be steaming my Bible app way more and listening to politics less.

It occurred to me too. It really disrupted the positive news cycle.

In Pres. Trump’s impeachment for a phone call he brought up Crowdstrike, maybe because Hillary got special treatment to hand her servers containing evidence of security violations and possible foreign intel fingerprints over to Crowdstrike instead of the FBI. Supposedly Crowdstrike was trusted by the FBI. They could have scrubbed them instead.

Crowdstrike enterprise security software is considered best of breed by people I know in cybersecurity.

OTOH good security products under normal circumstances and connected crooks or foreign intelligence agents at the top wanting to sell cybersecurity tools that can look at all data on the system could both be true. Worrisome.

From the call: https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/6429025/Unclassified09-2019.pdf

An expression I’ve long employed is “you can’t be THAT bad by accident.”

Crowdsource says it’s not a hack but an update. Whatever it is it’s a sloppy way to do it. Have they panicked over an urgent need to immediately cover their tracks, i.e., wipe the comms clean? All those who shorted the market on the planned hit are now running for cover. Why did the perp have encrypted software installed on his phones?

I’ve had similar results with server patches from Microsoft.

🚨🚨🚨Did you know that the President of CrowdStrike Services and the Chief Security Officer served as the Executive Assistant Director of the FBI under the Obama-Biden administration? 🚨🚨🚨

Weird how the CrowdStrike @CrowdStrike global outage happened during President Trump’s nomination speech at the RNC Convention.
