Texas Dem doubles down on support for stripping Trump's Secret Service protection

WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 20: Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) speaks during a press conference outside the U.S. Capitol March 20, 2024 in Washington, DC.

WASHINGTON (TND) — Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, reaffirmed her support Thursday for a bill that would remove Secret Service protection for former President Donald Trump.

The congresswoman asserted her position on the legislation in response to state Rep. Brian Harrison, R-Waxahachie, who urged her to resign following Trump’s attempted assassination.

The "Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable, or 'DISGRACED,' Former Protectees Act" would remove Secret Service protection for people convicted of certain felonies.

Rep. Crockett claimed the bill was in the interest of taxpayers who shouldn’t have to fund protection for people serving prison time.

“As a sitting member of congress we don’t even get secret service protection so why should taxpayers foot the bill for someone who a jury of his/her peers has deemed guilty of a felony or in this case 34 of ‘em, if they are sentenced to time,” she wrote on social media.

“The prison is full of officers not to mention, why should we make an entire team of public servants have to go to prison, too?!” the congresswoman added.

State Rep. Harrison was one of 16 members of the Texas Legislature who, along with 11 Republican nominees, signed a letter telling Rep. Crockett she has forfeited any “moral authority” to represent Texas. The congresswoman claimed her opponents were only looking for “clout” on X.

“Oh the evil & illogical who don’t even serve on my level believe they have sway or authority over me (insert white privilege),” she said. “While I’ve been out of the country on official business, these losers have been looking for Twitter clout.”

State Rep. Harrison posted on X that he was proud to demand she resign.

“I mean what type of men go after women anyway, oh Republicans,” Rep. Crockett replied. “The next time you think it’s a great idea to talk to me; don’t.”

The congresswoman is running for reelection this year in a district that includes parts of Dallas. She challenged Republicans to beat her in the November election.

“If y’all think your ideas or opinions matter to my district, go work against me to get me kicked out of office,” Rep. Crockett said. “I dare you to go knock doors in my district and cry a river to my constituents and see how it works out for you.”
