The book is pretty roundly derided as being a bunch of BS. Presumably the movie is also.

Roundly derided by who? Liberals? You?
Did you read, watch or analyze any of it?

What are you talking about? It was a very good book. With 96K reviews on amazon giving it a 4.3/5 rating.

Have you read his book? His sister verifies the authenticity of Vance’s description of his horrific childhood. She revealed in an interview that she wept when she read it and felt guilty that she didn’t stay behind to help her younger brother. Without his grandparents who took over his upbringing, Vance might be dead. His mother was a suicidal drug addict. Vance’s way out was to enlist in the Marines. He credits them with giving him direction and a sense of purpose.

I read the criticism of his book. His critics don’t believe anyone could survive what he endured. I don’t know how they have any real knowledge of his life. They just don’t like the message of the book which is his love of country and the love of his extended family that enabled him to rise about his circumstances.

His grandmother and grandfather were hillbillies from Kentucky who moved to Ohio after WWII to find work. They came with many others from the same part of Appalachia. Vance still identifies with the values they instilled in him. He despairs about the situation of these people who live in communities that no longer offer work and decent schools. These are poor whites who feel hopeless and turn to drugs like Oxycontin to cope. Nobody has been speaking for them. Vance’s eloquent book does. I found it incredibly moving. It’s not b.s.

You might want to read it before you make ignorant remarks.

I just checked the movie review on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics (most of whom are industry America-hating leftists, of course) panned it and the audiences gave it great scores. So most FReepers will probably like it.

Bullshiite. Your comment reflects some kind of ugly bias against Vance...and your comment is not accurate.

The book (which I am about halfway through) and the movie are regarded by most people familiar with one or the other as excellent accounts of how a boy with a gritty childhood (unstable family, hillbilly background, drug-addicted mother) grew up to become a Yale Law grad, a U.S. Senator, and now a V.P. candidate.

BTW, the book isn't about events but is a child's very honest account of his life (as perceived by him). It's his story told from his POV. That's not the kind of thing someone else can dispute (even if they really hate the person telling the story).

Baloney. The book is excellent and the movie is good but not as good as the book, which is often the case.

Yes, leftists have been hating on it. But in the message board threads I saw, others with personal knowledge of the events and people strongly stood up for it. And really, it is showing us things that most of us in flyover country have been seeing all around us if our eyes are open.

I haven't read the book, but the movie DEFINITELY belongs in one of those "so bad its good" categories where the film is UNintentionally hilarious.

I felt bad for laughing at the J.D. Vance grandma character ("MawMaw") after I found out at the end of the film that she was based on his actual, real-life grandma.

Jed Clampett & clan would take one look at this film's characters and go "Dude, take it down a notch"
