1. He IS guilty.
2. Menendez is (for now) running as an “independent” in November to try to hold his Senate seat. This conviction should finish him or at least increase the pressure on him to drop out. If the verdict had been different he would be a serious threat to split the (considerable) left-wing vote and allow the alleged Republican to win.
