There’s no other way to say it: Ingrid Andress—the country singer you may or may not know from songs like “More Hearts Than Mine” and “Wishful Drinking”—gave a god awful performance of The Star Spangled Banner last night. It might not have been Fergie bad (feel free to debate that one in the comments), but it certainly joins the un-hallowed halls of performances like Carl Lewis’ and Roseanne Barr’s.

Not saying it should be a law.. But, out of respect, the nat’l Anthem really should just play played/ sang straight.
And a lot less chance of making an ass of yourself. You sing it straight, you botch a few notes, it happens.. You go all be-bop and scat Yma Surmac and and miss.. It is very very very bad.
But is it as bad as “Fanfare for the First Lady”?

I sang the national anthem several times before Houston Astros games. Prior to the first couple of times I performed it, I had anxiety dreams, and one I had was of me botching the song badly. But even in those anxiety nightmares, it was never *that* bad. Ouch!
My fingers are tired from just looking at that.

I was a big country fan all of my life. Now, I’ve never even head of one of the so-called new, meathead “country singers” throwin’ out trash music and calling it “country”. Except for maybe JellyBean.

I think so too. It’s their dog whistle “eff yew” to the America they secretly (or not so secretly) hate.
It is not a “soul” song. It is not a “rap” song. It is not a “country” song. It is not a “torch” song. It is not a “pop” song. It is not a “folk” song. It is not a “kiddy” song. It is not a “hymn” nor is it a “sea chanty”. It should be sung as written, and unlike American Idol, do not “Make it your own”. Performers that butcher the national anthem should be required to listen to 15 or 20 different singers of “Oh Canada”, and notice that they don’t deviate from the music.
I wanted to see if maybe she was just having a bad day so I listened to some of her other performances.
Nope. She. Can. Not. Sing. So my next question is, Just how rich is her daddy and how much did he pay to get her a contract?

Absolutely. I am a baritone/bass and have sung it at several sporting events and dedications. You work out your key by how low, but comfortably, you can sing the third note.
I don't know about other singers, but before I go out onto the court or field or whatever I have the first note humming in the back of my throat. I keep it going, quietly, until it is time to sing. If you get the first three notes correct, the rest is on autopilot.
