Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old would-be assassin who shot Donald Trump, was once rejected from his high school rifle club and considered a danger.
The registered Republican and 2022 high school graduate opened fire at the former president with an AR-style rifle from a roof 130 yards from the rally stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday at 6.15pm.
Now, disturbing anecdotes have emerged from those who knew Crooks dating back to his days at Bethel Park High School.
Crooks tried out for the school's rifle team but was turned away because he was a bad shooter, said Frederick Mach, a current captain of the team who was a few years behind Crooks at the school.
Jonathan Myers, a member of the team around the time Crooks auditioned, said there was something ominous about him back then.
He didn't just not make the team, he was asked not to come back because how bad of a shot he was, it was considered like, dangerous,' Myers told ABC News.
Fellow classmate Jameson Murphy added: 'He tried out…and was such a comically bad shot he was unable to make the team and left after the first day.'
Murphy told the New York Post that Crooks once fired a shot that missed his target by almost 20 feet.
Crooks once fired from the seventh lane — the closest lane to the right wall — and hit the left wall, completely missing every target on the back wall. He missed his target by close to 20 feet, Murphy recalled.
Others who were on the team said Crooks would make inappropriate jokes and overall, didn't seem right.

Someone who used those put downs as motivation?
There was an on-camera interview with a classmate which I believe was done by the NY Post. The young man says Crooks was horribly bullied, among other things. At the very end of the interview, he says he wore a COVID mask, long after COVID was over. I have not seen that repeated anywhere.
What more do you need to know to know Mr. Crooks’ political leanings? Only leftists wear the mask.
It's the first question that came to my mind.
And the second was that maybe he practiced.
A LOT.
There are far too many inconsistencies and unanswered questions about this whole thing. Too many things that don't make sense, unless it's a conspiracy.
Yes - pretty much center mass to the skull.
That was my thought too. “I’ll show them!”
Things are starting to add up for me. The government tried to have Trump killed and werr planning to explain it away as a lapse in security.
They didn’t say ... but IMO, it doesn’t matter.
I think the cop who confronted him on the rooftop rattled him and may have saved Trump’s life.
He knew the clock was ticking and rushed his aim.
Hey, who wasn’t bullied in school? Proving someone wrong was often motivation for succeeding at *something*.
I am better than that at the range and I am sixty five. It does take a few bad shots...like missing the target altogether.
Sounds very plausible.
If that’s true, then who fired at Trump?
Bingo!
Antifa has weapon training programs all over the USA.
He was trained.
Antifa fingerprints
Makes sense to me. He couldn’t shot worth a darn. The assassin didn’t take into account the crosswind and blew the bullet to the left of Trump’s head.
Antifa has weapons training programs all over
Probably did shooter games on the PC.
.
That’s what it sounds like.
Trump’s fault.
They have them, but use precision air rifles, which allows for classrooms to be used for the range with portable pellet traps. Also removes the need for ear protection and eliminates lead dust.
In the early 70’s I shot at a high school range with .22’s and it was a dingy cold war relic.
