The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said that they broke up a cockfighting ring in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Tuesday.
At around 11:45 a.m. deputies were dispatched for a welfare check near 30000 Highland Way near the Summit. While in the area, they found an unrelated cockfighting pit.
A search warrant was immediately written and obtained approval. Most of the night was then spent searching the property, said a sheriff's office spokesperson.
Deputies and Animal Control officers found ten firearms and around 200 roosters. The roosters had been "mutilated" to attach cockfighting knives, said the spokesperson.
Juan Buenrostro Ochoa, 40, was arrested in connection with the case. The investigation is ongoing.

In Arizona they banned cockfighting and they switched to fighting wrens.
Sick pukes that do this!
Where there are Mexicans, there is Mexico.
It’s legal in the U.S. - in Puerto Rico, maybe other areas.
“Where Da Wimmins At?”
And several years ago I read a census estimate that 25% of Mexican citizens had relocated to the US. Bet that number is higher now.
The U.S. created laws that incentivized that. What did you think would happen? It’s tantamount to a declaration of war on Mexico.
Was one of the roosters named Little Jerry Seinfeld?
The amount of money being sent back to Mexico is astronomical.
Need 100% remittance tax. And fully documentation if over $100.
I served three years at the Naval Hospital Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. I went off base and saw a large wall poster of two cocks fighting. I bought it, of course. I’ll see if I can’t locate it.
No, cockfighting is illegal in every state and in every U. S. territory.
Where did you get that? It’s a felony in over 40 states, and even possessing birds for fighting is illegal in most states. Watching a cockfight is illegal in 43 states.
From Wikipedia: As of 2023, cockfighting is illegal in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories.
The federal government tried to make it illegal there, but the local legislature defied them and passed laws keeping it legal.
Despite the federal government, the Supreme Court, etc. don’t expect anyone to get arrested for cockfighting there.
OK, wouldn’t be the first time Wikipedia was wrong or at least incomplete.
it might be the exception to the rules here in Virginia. around 1990s, I know of a cockfighting breeder, who is the estranged dad of my best friend.
I was very surprised to hear that it existed here. we didn’t have that big of Mexican population here.
my best friend would tell me how they have endless supply of eggs growing up. how tough the meat of rooster would be, and his phobia of chicken feces
