Did Glen Campbell's audiences pay to see him, and did they expect him to "fail miserably" when they decided to spend their time at his concert?

No. They knew his conditions. There was no attempt to mislead the audience.

My brother and wife went to see B.B. King at the casino maybe 5 to 10 years ago. He said it was sad, and terrible. The first 15 minutes was him introducing the band. Then he played a short song - poorly. Then he had the audience join in on the second song, and played the refrain over and over and over again. Then there was intermission.
Everyone left, and got their money back. The ticket guy was very apologetic.
