We Talked To Experts About Why You Hate Mayonnaise So Much
Bustle ^ | 2/20/24 | Lucia Peters

There’s no shortage of divisive foods in the world, but for many people, there seems to be a special kind of derision reserved especially for one particular condiment: Mayo. Some people really hate mayonnaise. And it isn’t just always just simple dislike; among the anti-mayo crowd, there’s a contingent who are vehemently opposed to the stuff. Feelings can run so strongly that it might lead you to wonder exactly why so many people hate mayonnaise so much — but perhaps not unexpectedly, there isn’t just one explanation for the strength of feeling so many share about mayo. It might come down to any number of possibilities, according to several experts with whom Bustle recently spoke — but together, these possibilities paint a compelling larger picture about what fuels our likes and dislikes when it comes to our gastronomic experiences.

Canadians use it with fries instead of ketchup.

I like GOOD mayo; Dukes, Helmans, even Blue Plate. Kraft mayo always tasted like old cheap salad oil, to me. I like miracle whip, even though it’s not mayo. I used to buy both. Now I just buy mayo and sprinkle a little sweetener on it if my husband wants a sandwich, so it tastes like MW to him. And I buy mayo by the gallon. It’s way cheaper that way, and I’m sort of sought after for my potato salad for get togethers.

When you really want to stir the pot, go ask Brits the same about brown sauce. Or their nasty mushy peas or curry sauce.

Not a big fan of mayo, but I don’t hate it. BLT needs mayo.

It’s good on a 7 layer salad.

Cause it has the consistency of phlegm. In things macaroni salad where it’s been distributed enough that it’s just basic lube I’m ok with it. But never on a sandwich or any other form where there’s a lump of mayo.

What I find interesting is there are people who hate mayo but like the fake stuff. I guess there’s the taste difference, but the texture is the same. So I don’t like either.

Miracle Whip is hideous.

I agree with you...it has no place on a burger. I'm fine w/ mayo in potato salad, cole slaw, etc.

It goes with vegetables, not meat.

It’s oil and egg, that’s it.

I beg to differ.

Here are the ingredients:

Canola oil, water, liquid whole egg, vinegar, liquid yolk, salt, sugar, spices, concentrated lemon juice and calcium disodium edta

The canola oil by itself (main ingredient) makes this a very unhealthy food.

Me too!

...on BLT, turkey, ham, etc.

Mayonnaise, Mustard, and Ketchup on burgers as well.

Mayonnaise in macaroni and potato salads, deviled eggs!

Even as glaze with parmesan cheese on chicken and fish...

Miracle Whip for me too. It’s like mayo with a zingy tang.

Hate ketchup on fries. BBQ sauce or plain salt.
