Bustle ^ | 2/20/24 | Lucia Peters

There’s no shortage of divisive foods in the world, but for many people, there seems to be a special kind of derision reserved especially for one particular condiment: Mayo. Some people really hate mayonnaise. And it isn’t just always just simple dislike; among the anti-mayo crowd, there’s a contingent who are vehemently opposed to the stuff. Feelings can run so strongly that it might lead you to wonder exactly why so many people hate mayonnaise so much — but perhaps not unexpectedly, there isn’t just one explanation for the strength of feeling so many share about mayo. It might come down to any number of possibilities, according to several experts with whom Bustle recently spoke — but together, these possibilities paint a compelling larger picture about what fuels our likes and dislikes when it comes to our gastronomic experiences.

When I was kid, I hated mayo, except potato salad. Now I really like it, except on hamburgers.

Mayonnaise is easier to get off of your shirt when you have a drip from a burger. Mustard stains easier.

“For me, Mayo’s necessary on certain stuff, not at all on others.”

Yep, it’s required on every type of poultry sandwich.

And forbidden on any beef or pork sandwich. Whether an actual sandwich...or a hot dog...burger...any variety.

I know a half dozen people who love full strength Miracle Whip and have no idea why people choose Mayonnaise instead.

Miracle Whip is like the Encyclopedia Britannica of the Mayonnaise family.

How do you make a BLT without mayo?

It's a B-L-T, not a B-L-T-M.

Can’t mayo be homemade with good ingredients? I really don’t know.

... Miracle Whip is like the Encyclopedia Britannica of the Mayonnaise family.

Or just maybe it is the one some people prefer.

Some people really hate mayonnaise.

Some people really hate articles about how people hate certain foods too.

You don't like mayonnaise, don't eat it.

There, I have solved the problem.

Meat, cheese, extra cheese and occasionally butter.

I like you.

I have no taste but I like you.

A cheese burger should be a seasoned ground beef patty cooked on a grill with the cheese well melted and served on a buttered toasted bun. That is it.

No pickles, no onion, no sauces. They have their place but not on a cheeseburger. Especially the first cheeseburger of the summer.
