In sum, don’t save, don’t consider the future, and become a debt-slave

Yeah, my take was the same.
The idea that you should spend everything you have now because its not going to be safe tomorrow is something that destroys countries and cultures.
We retired to The Villages FL a few years ag. I have more friends now then I ever have. We’re very active and there is always something to do. Add to that, retirement is much cheaper then I planed. My only regret is it is hard to make the transition from saver to spender, and we’ll probably die with a a bunch of property and money with no one to leave it to.
and in Canada, if you’re old and broke and depressed, they have a cure for that. Euthanasia.
I’m 53, figure I’ll retire in 10-13 years. Depends on the market. That said, my wife and I were married with a son at 19 - broke as could be. Those early years were hard and instilled a ‘live within your means’ attitude.
That said, I’ve done well since...and realized that I’m at a point where I shouldn’t be quite so frugal. I need to enjoy some of it now, especially as I’m in good health.
In other words, be a burden to someone else and rely on the dole to get you by. Be irresponsible. Laugh, love, live and be happy for tomorrow we die? Sounds like a great plan.

This is definitely what the younger folks are doing now. And nothing reinforces it like a 78-year old wishing she had spent more on “happenings” than saving for the future.
That would be an interesting poll of older folks. Wishing that they had saved more for retirement, or spent more when they were young. (And no - “BOTH” is not an option!)
