Lyrics Jump down the shelters to get away The boys are cockin' up their guns Tell us general, is it party time? If it is can we all come Don't think that we don't know Don't think that we're not trying Don't think we move too slow It's no use after crying Saying It's a mistake, it's a mistake It's a mistake, it's a mistake After the laughter as died away And all the boys have had their fun No surface noise now, not much to say They've got the bad guys on the run Don't try to say you're sorry Don't say he drew his gun They've gone and grabbed old Ronnie He's not the only one saying It's a mistake, it's a mistake It's a mistake, it's a mistake Tell us commander, what do you think? Cause we know that you love all that power Is it on then, are we on the brink? We wish you'd all throw in the towel We'll not fade out too soon Not in this finest hour Whistle your favorite tune We'll send a card and flower Saying It's a mistake, it's a mistake It's a mistake, it's a mistake
yup...
Back when music videos told stories, had messages (usually anti-war) and were actually well produced. The 80’s were a good time for Australian bands: Men at Work, Midnight Oil, INXS, The Church, etc...

In the basemaents/steam tunnels at college, there were the Civil Defence sighs.
I never proceeded farther.
I think I would have found CD food and water.
Just some history - - -
Those articles were about some watchlisted folks being inside the US and the concern was they may be up to something for the upcoming 4th of July or the current Islamic holiday.
In the 70s and 80s I don’t remember being anxious about anything, though our English comp books were filled with hyperventilating excerpts from the nuclear freeze movement’s booklets, none of which were convincing.
Tornadoes at night. Those were kind of scary. Had a close call with one of those.
Living near East St. Louis during the birth of the carjacking craze, even scarier.
Being surrounded by Illinois Democrats, scariest of all.
Nukes weren’t even in the top ten.
Somewhat related:
“The Reckoning”
(Within Temptation feat. Jacoby Shaddix)
As cold as stone, they march in darkness
Enslaving the young and killing their fathers
But soon they’ll know
The path they’ve chosen
Has carved their faith in stone
In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we’ll always hold the line
Of reckoning
Red tears run down like a river
Don’t close your eyes, it won’t disappear
No fear you wanna end the pain
Don’t let go, don’t back down
Hold the line
We’ll bring the reckoning
In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we’ll always hold the line
Of reckoning
We’re all alone, walking in twilight
The night has been long and so many’ve fallen
Feel no remorse, light will be breaking
Our freedom is worth it all
In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we’ll always hold the line
Of reckoning
Red tears run down like a river
Don’t close your eyes, it won’t disappear
No fear you wanna end the pain
Don’t let go, don’t back down
Hold the line
We’ll bring the reckoning
I see your face, find peace of mind
Between the madness and the sadness and the fire burning
The end of war, the great divine
We’ll see the day of reckoning
In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we’ll always hold the line
In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we’ll always hold the line
Of reckoning
(We’ll bring the reckoning)
In blood and tears, a thousand times
We rise against, we’ll always hold the line
Of reckoning

For some reason this Chrysler Air Raid siren showed up on my youtube a few weeks ago. Cool stuff.
*If you haven’t listened to Men At Work, these are “must-listen-to” songs.

3 out of 5 ain’t bad.
They were (are?) a great band.
Ha! I think I was a youngish tread head sitting atop a tank in West Germany when this song came out.
Don’t know why they cut off the end of that a few seconds too
early.

Also, when I clicked the link, it showed other videos including 'Waiting For My Real Life To Begin' by Colin Hay.

It troubles me that such great songs with personal meaning can be so buried away.

At Trumps rally on Friday he was talking about how Biden said how climate change is an “existential threat”.
“I don’t know - does he even know what that word means? I’ll tell you what the real threat is now- World War III. And I know more than most about the weapons that would be used - terrible.”
And coming back around to a song....
Manhattan Project by RUSH. A short history of the bomb - no preaching.

The big bang, took and shook the world
Shot down the rising sun
The end was begun, it would hit everyone
When the chain reaction was done
The big shots, try to hold it back
Fools try to wish it away
The hopeful depend on a world without end
Whatever the hopeless may say
Absolutely killer lyrics! First time I heard them they stopped me in my tracks.
“I think I would have found CD food and water.

Our grade school gym locker room hardtack and water barrels.
Thank goodness that doesn’t sound like today at all!!
Thinking such as this has cause us to destroy our civil defense system.
Leaving it all in ruins and not up dating it.
Just let me stick my head into a hole.
