31 Best Punk Songs Of All Time
Music Grotto ^ | 12/19/23 | Liam Flynn

Punk is a raucous, stripped-down genre of rock music that, at its best, is made of “three chords and the truth.” Punk rock is accessible and immediate, featuring artists who may only know a handful of chords, but they’re into it for the music, not the technique. Arranging them into any kind of hierarchy is bound to get punches thrown in a punk bar. Here are the 31 best punk songs of all time.

1. Anarchy In The UK – Sex Pistols Sex Pistols - Anarchy In The UK

The archetypical punk song, this 1977 Cook, Matlock, Jones, and Rotten song was the proverbial foreign object in the punchbowl of the overproduced British rock scene of the late 1970s. Dripping with contempt for the British hierarchical worldview like the rest of Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols, this is one of the classic punk songs for a reason.

2. God Save The Queen – Sex Pistols Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen Revisited

Recorded almost midway through the 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II, this ripping indictment of English authority is a classic punk banger. Half-sung and half-shouted by Johnny Rotten, the angry lyrics and simple message of rage toward the system and its abuses, personified by the Queen, make this a song that will long outlive its target.

Way too much Green Day on the list, the posers. Also didn’t have any Black Flag, Violent Femmes, or Misfits on the list.

“31 of my favorite songs, most of which are punk.”

There’s no denying how fun Crazy Little Thing Called Love and 99 Red Balloons are, but they’re not punk. And I’m not intending to be a punk gatekeeper; I’d allow Roxanne (Police), White Wedding (Idol), Happy Birthday (Beatles) and much of their German-era stuff, Rock and Roll (Led Zeppelin), Stupid Girl (Garbage)... but the word “punk” has to have some meaning, even if modified by “post,” “pop,” “new,” etc.

“True Stories” should be seen too. ‘Way ahead of its time: “Movies and TV are filled with people I don’t even want to know.” “News at 4, News at 5, News at 6” etc. (or something to that effect).

To our list, may I add:

Stealing Peoples’ Mail - DKs- ha-ha-ha!

Some of my housemates opened for Camper any time they played the Eugene area...mid- 80s. I’d include Violent Femmes in the punk/ indie mix, as well.

interesting- never heard that one before-

"Ticket to Ride" wasn't just a throw away on the album, either. They released it as 45 RPM single. It charted, but not very high. Both the Carpenters and the Beatles covered "Please MR. Postman" as well.

I was given a chance to sing with the Carpenters when they were touring in my home town when I was in 3rd grade. They needed a children's chorus for "Sing". I hated the song. My sister and best friend took them up on it though.

"London Calling would’ve been my #1"

Ditto. I was never a fan of punk, but we all loved The Clash in high school:

London Calling
The Guns of Brixton
The Magnificent Seven
This is Radio Clash

Too much Green Day in that list. A millennial evidently wrote it.

Notable omissions:

“Hollow Inside” by The Buzzcocks,

and no mention of
Ian Dury.

Then I’ll offer Live at Leeds as a proto-punk album. Young Man Blues as performed by The Who is punk. And what is more punk than destroying your instruments at the end of the show? A defining characteristic of The Who in this era.

When I was in college it was a 6 hour drive 1 way to visit the folks. I made that round trip drive 4-6 times a year. I’d generally listen to Quadrophenia straight through at least once in the round trip, if not once each way. So yes, you could say I like Quadrophenia. The Real Me arguably has the best base line ever.
