Uber and Lyft riders explain why they do and don't tip their drivers — who only get tips a quarter of the time

Valerie takes Lyft rides between two and six times a week for work — but she only sometimes leaves a tip.

Some ride-hailing drivers have been unprofessional, she told Business Insider. Others haven't greeted her or picked her up far from where she requested. Even when a driver provides decent service, she said the increasing fares for her commute have led her to tip less frequently.

"The over-charging, high prices, cancellation from drivers, and Lyft making me late for work didn't permit me to leave a tip for some," Valerie said.

Been years but I thought Uber drivers couldn’t accept tips?

Uber, at least, was forced to put tipping on their site by the drivers - therefore no tipping from me. If they don’t like the terms from Uber, they don’t have to drive (and if they had a brain, they wouldn’t drive for them).

Excessive hard regenerative braking is a great way to not get a tip.

Can tip cash or in app

Cash is better because it doesn’t show up on the 1099

I usually feel the opposite. If I'm a tourist, then I'd want some conversation, but if I was using it for commuting, like this lady, I've got other things to do.

Drivers score their passengers. Lack of tipping will probably get you worse service.

If more expensive than taxi service - no tip for just driving

Otherwise, if quick to pick up & pleasant - $1

+ $1/handled bag
+ $5/large item

https://www.paycor.com/resource-center/articles/minimum-wage-tipped-employees-by-state/

Florida still has a differential for restaurant wait staff:

“Florida $13.00 (eff. 9/30/24) $3.02 $9.98 (eff. 9/30/24)”

The differential is most states is either still substantial or almost completely retained.

I only take Lyft to the airport, and I usually give a big tip because it is so inexpensive, and the driver needs to feed their family.

The differential is an employer bonus. They still pay their employees the full minimum wage, but they can count tips against their pay, down to that tipped 'minimum wage'. If there are no tips, that employee still gets paid $7.25/hr, not $2.13/hr.
