Six Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Went Bald
Men's Health ^ | 4/24/24 | Stuart Heritage

I have been bald for almost three years. Some people – primarily my brother – will tell you that I have actually been bald for much longer than that, but I like to count from the moment I realised it was pointless to pretend that I still had hair. The moment I stopped trying to keep it in place with chemical sprays. The moment I abandoned the comb-over. It has been almost three years since I bought an electric razor from Argos and buzzed the whole lot off.

God created a few perfect heads

The rest he had to cover with hair.

My dad was very bald by 40. He went the high end toupe - Hair Club for Men - route. Spent tons on upkeep and new rugs as his hair color changed.

At 60-ish my forehead had crept back about halfway to the back AND I was developing a bald spot on the crown. I was nearing the awkward state of just a strip of hair separating the two bald areas. Enough.

I shaved what was left off.

When you entirely shave your head, it is INTENTIONAL. You don’t look like a poor sap that is trying to comb over what is left. You have embraced baldness and you and it are one!

It doesn’t hurt that my wife thinks a totally bald head is sexy.

1 - I save a lot on shampoo
2 - I save a lot on hair cuts
3 - Morning hair isn’t a problem
4 - sunburn can be a problem
5 - women seem to like to rub my dome
6 - There is no lower maintenance hair than no hair

If you’re not balding as a male at some point, you just may have an estrogen problem.

Some of the silliest people I know spend an awful lot of time looking in the mirror.

I caught a bug in Vietnam (when I was 18) and the fever was so high I lost most of my hair. It grew back but by the time I was 22 I had male pattern baldness. Since I was married by then I did not let it bother me and just accepted it. Of all life’s problems, this is so minor it is not worth worrying about.

I’m in my mid 70’s and have a full head of snow white hair that seems to grow like weeds in the garden. I also hate getting haircuts, almost lost an earlobe to a drunken barber when I was about 5. So, when I do get haircuts it’s usually overdue. Every now and then I get the urge to tell my barber to just shave it all off.

I’m bald on top and keep the hair I have left short and love it that way. I see old photos of when I had a lot of hair in the 70’s and wonder how I could stand having longer hair.

I started losing my hair when I was a teenager. I’ve been shaving my head since my 30s. Otherwise I look like a white George Jefferson since hair is kinky

2 ways to deal with it as a young man:

1) develop a sense of humor.
2) Marry a beautiful girl when you’re young.

In 2009, I developed Alopcia, which is a weird type of balding where it does not fit normal patterns. In my case, it started as a spot about the size of a dime, left of center on the back of my head about 2 inches below the crown. My hairdresser told me about it when she was cutting my hair one day. Over the next several months, the spot grew in size, until it was the size of a softball. There was no covering it at that point, and I was within weeks of just shaving it all off ... but then I lost my extremely stressful job, so decided to hold off because I was going to be pinching pennies until I found a new job and did not want to go into interviews with a totally foreign look. Within a month, I noticed the spot shrinking. Within 4 months of leaving that job, it was gone, and has never re-emerged. In my case, the Alopecia was caused by stress.

I once heard a bald man say, “The Good Lord blessed some of us with perfect scalps. The rest, He gave hair.”

Gotta tell ya, that attitude rocked.

Male pattern baldness is caused by extra testosterone.
Have to take the bad with the good.

It's nature's way of signalling to the younger females of that fact.

Well, I did #2 for sure, still married, 50 years in October.
As far as my sense of humor, I’ve been told I’m quite strange. Don’t care, my grand daughter thinks I’m hilarious, and making her laugh makes everything worth it.

Trying to hide a bald spot with a come-over or toupee or whatever is vain.
Getting Biden hair plugs or hair treatments is vain.
Styling your hair is vain.
Coloring your hair is vain.

But there’s nothing vain about just having all your natural hair - just get a practical haircut periodically. Hair is like fingernails and toenails - good to have but just keep them trimmed.

I don’t know whether or not extra testosterone causes baldness; I tend to believe that’s a conceit. Although, I do believe you get your proclivity for baldness or not from your mother’s father. That’s my observation, anyway.

Keep it short so

It can’t be grabbed and held in a fight.
Helmets fit better
Time saver
Money saver
High and tight looks better

Carry on
