Pizza Hut abruptly shutters 15 restaurants - with 129 more at risk - after huge bust-up with major franchisee

Almost 150 Pizza Hut restaurants are set to close due to an ongoing financial dispute with one of its major franchisees.

Friday night saw the abrupt shuttering of 15 locations in Indiana that left staff and customers stunned.

DailyMail.com can reveal a further 129 across Illinois, Georgia, South Carolina and Wisconsin are on the brink of shutting as part of the dispute.

EYM Group - which operates the 144 Pizza Huts across the five states - is being sued by the chain in relation to millions of dollars of unpaid bills.

When a deadline passed for the Indiana restaurants last week, they were quickly closed. The same will happen to the others in coming weeks and months.

Meanwhile, EYM blamed Pizza Hut for its finanical pronlems. It says its sales have been badly hit by the pizza chain not modernising its menus or app to keep up with rivals like Domino's and Little Caesar's.

Overall, Pizza Hut's US restaurants have seen sales slip 6 percent this year compared to last.

Staff at Pizza Huts in Indiana posted on social media that they were given no warning ahead of the closures. They said they had been told to file for unemployment.

A Pizza Hut spokesperson said: 'The company is working to transition these locations and expects many of them will reopen soon.'

Pizza Hut has set EYM staggered deadlines for payment in each state. The chain will close down the restaurants in each if the debts are not paid.

if only they started making good pizza again like they did in the 80’s.
They only lasted this long because folks didn’t want to give up on them.

Their pizza sucks and people have given up on them changing back.

Were they in the process of cooking, serving, and eating pizza?!

it used to be a real treat to go out to a pizza hut in the 80s. Now it’s just gross and overpriced.

Domino's turned around. Their pizza is not bad.

Now Pizza Hut sucks.

Are there anymore dine-in Pizza Huts?

Back in the late 80's the pizza buffet was great.

That pretty much applies to most restaurants today. I just back from dinner with a friend, we went to Longhorn. I’ve never had a bad meal there—until tonight. French Onion soup was blah, Caesar salad was blah, and the 12 oz ribeye was about 4 ounces of fat and gristle. And it cost $42 (for one, tip included)

EYM blamed Pizza Hut for its financial problems

Imagine operating 144 Pizza Hut restaurants and just now figuring out they have a sub-par, overpriced product.

Casey’s is a Regional gas station convenience store. Few years ago the invested in making really good pizza. They are hurting Pizza Hut bad around here. I used to love Pizza Hut thin crust supreme but they got stupid on the price and toppings so I haven had it in a few years. We also have Godfathers which makes kick ass pizza. Pizza Hut isn’t the only game in town anymore.

Put Put, to the Pizza Hut !

At one point a few years ago, our local pizza hut began offering a different sauce. Coming from Northern Illinois, where there are a lot of Italians and authentic pizza shops, having to eat pizza hut is a very poor substitute for the real deal. If you can’t get the sauce right, you might as well hang it up. Of course, most of the locals here in Oklahoma have never had authentic pizza, so they think the hut’s is just fine. (They also think Simple Simons and Mario’s make good pizza, both started by non-italian Okies, who obviously hadn’t had the real deal, either.) Nothing wrong with not being Italian, but you should at least know what real pizza tastes like. That’s my rant.

Casey’s is now offering thin crust pizza, and they are very generous with the cheese. I still don’t like their sauce, but it’s better than pizza huts.

All of the locations in Indiana are in the N/W part of the state. Wow.

I’ll admit, I haven’t ordered Pizza Hut pizza in about four years.

Still, I could never bring myself to order Domino’s as a substitute.

I’ve been ordering from a place called Marco’s. I don’t know if it’s regional or what, but the pizza is decent.

About the time I turned 45, my celiac gene turned on. Gluten free is not a fad in our household. It is so bad, unless I am absolutely sure, I will not eat something. My beautiful wife does not have full blown celiac, but she is gluten sensitive. Fortunately, we live in the Greatest Country On God’s Green Earth, and the choices/options are plentiful. The reason this relates to pizza is the gluten free combination pizza from Pizza Guys. They have a separate oven, separate utensils, the whole nine yards. The danger is that......my wife swears they must put crack cocaine in the crust. It is really, really good. They only make the gluten free pizza in the 12 inch size, so we usually get two.

Pizza Hut in China is sort of a fancy restaurant with a huge menu.

Yes, but they are more casual. No more red carpet, candles on the tables, or red checked table cloths. The waitresses no longer wear the polyester dresses, either. They do still have a buffet. Also, after a 40 year relationship with Bud/Bud Light, they now have Modelo/Coors. THAT is the proof that the A-B abandonment is permanent.

I worked at Pizza Hut in the early '80s, and have plenty of stories. I even wrote a series of comic strips inspired by that time, but have no artist to draw them.
