The ONLY reason for battery research is the climate con. Without that, nobody would need such batteries.
But I have to admit I sure do like lithium-ion batteries in my gadgets, tools, snow blower, leaf blower, wife’s e-bike, etc.

The other one, if we don’t kill ourselves first, is space travel. We’ll need high-capacity, low-drain batteries of the highest quality to harness what little we can get of sunpower.
At some point, EVs and all tools and machines such that now use ICE as their power source will become de rigueur. Wit the possible exception of large earth movers and construction machines.
The battery research is really now in its ‘Edison and Tesla’ stage, with many discoveries and improvements to come..............
Don’t dismiss that battery-electric tech can evolve to be superior to ICE in many applications. The problem is the climate whackos are pushing the cart before the horse. If the government had invested the massive dollars into electric power generation and distribution rather than subsidizing the wealthy in buying fancy EVs with near super-car performance, we might be close to that point.
Or maybe not...

stick vacuum, weed-whacker, hedge trimmer, tire inflator, fan, chain saw, lawnmower.
Florida so nix the snow blower.

EV’s are great for cities. Moves pollution to power plants.
Also, the highest efficiency is achieved with a combined cycle gas turbine generating electricity for EV’s.
Hydro and nuclear plants rock!
Another one is vehicle jumpstarter battery packs. Those things were unwieldy back when they used lead acid batteries. Now they’re tiny thanks to Li-ion. It’s totally practical to keep one in your trunk. I’ve been grateful to have mine on several occasions.

Just one lithium battery ignition / explosion will make you unlike them.
