A senior from Montana has delivered a viral speech about the sorry state of property taxes in the Treasure State.
“I’m on Social Security, I’m 68-years-old and working just to pay my taxes,” says Kurt, in a clip shared on TikTok by Ryan Busse, who is running to be the next governor of Montana.
Kurt claims that over the last couple of years, his annual property taxes have soared from $895 to almost $8,000 — an increase of around 790% — which he says is like paying almost “$700 a month rent to the state to live in our own house.” The state has an Elderly Homeowner/Renter Tax Credit, and the maximum credit is $1,150.
“There needs to be a moratorium on what we have to pay,” he says, adding that he’s had to continue working into what should be his retirement golden years to cover his mounting property costs. “I’m stubborn enough [that] I don’t want to dig into my bank account to pay them.”

Montana?!?!
I never figured that to be a high tax state! Get it together guys!
“California has a Prop 13 which keeps property taxes low for longtime owners.”
I see you’re looking at that $1 million house.
We’re only going to offer $900,000 for it.
Did you know that the government of the State of California wants everybody to have decent affordable housing?
Even burger flippers?
Yes, indeed!
So Mr. & Mrs. BunStuffer and their two kiddies would have a place of about the same enclosed square footage?
And in the very same school district, no less!
Will they be paying $900,000?
No, not even close!
“private police”
affluent Los Angeles, 1987
an “ARMED RESPONSE” sign on nearly every lawn
Which is why it will never happen (seniors being exempted from property tax).
Sadly, people continue to vote for more taxes pretty much everytime it comes up on the ballot. We are at the point now where 50% of one's income goes to taxes of one sort or another and there seems no end to it.
In my town, the budget referendums are always held outside the normal election times, such as April or even August. Most citizens don't even realize there is a budget referendum coming up. However, all those who work for the town and state government does know, as they speak to one another, and they show up at these special elections en masse to make sure they get jammed through.
These referendums always seems to be tied to the schools or some other vital service like police and fire. In other words, if you dare vote against our tax increase, your house might burn down as we won't be able to pay firefighters on duty or needy school children might not be able to get hot school lunches or whatnot. All because of YOUR greed in not wanting to give up just a little more of your income to taxes.
As bad as things are taxwise in my parts, the people around here continue to vote for more of them.
As those who benefited from prop 13 die out, eventually most everyone in CA will be paying sky high property taxes.
“What happens when a person refuses to pay the response fee?”
A lien would be placed on the property, which might get sold by court order.
This is the government the Founders warned us about.
100% exactly right. The dollar is past life support (that was quantitative easing) and is now about to be rolled into the grave. It’ll all coincide with the final scenes of the Fourth Turning, which is nearing its climax. Btw, we’re already ~20% into a barter economy here in SW Montan.
(I apologize in advance for digressing from the main topic.)
I agree in principle; however, given the current “election season” that exists in many states, there is one extremely important reason to vote ASAP: Because it will keep someone else from fraudulently voting in your name!
Remember, even if you can sort out the fact that you did not cast the fraudulent vote, your subsequent vote has likely been neutralized because the illegal vote cannot be removed from the voting system.
I notice that people accept that property tax is legitimate. America is gone, we don’t even want to be free. There should be NO income taxes, there should be NO property taxes on your place of residence. N O N E.
“Election Day on April 16th?
Good idea”
Let’s take it one step further; no withholding of income taxes, no escrow for property taxes. EVERYBODY has to write a check for their income taxes and property taxes on April 15th, the day before election day. How many current politicians would still be in office in about 4 years?
Montana has no sales tax. Sales tax is the only fair tax as everyone pays, renters, illegals, everyone.
Everyone pays 55% in taxes, no matter how they are collected.
I don't have children in public schools yet the portion of my property tax that goes to funding public schools is high. Every child gets "free" breakfast and lunch, "free" tablets that are theirs, new swimming pools.
Free gender reassignment counselling.
You really think illegals are paying rent? It's subsidized by the federal goverment, i.e. the taxpayers.
What is the reasons behind the increase.... 800 to 8000 is insane “in a few years” that has to be something going on here.. more than simply “they can do it”... so what’s the backstory?
Any Freepers from Montana want to way in?
So? Your local government services aren’t called things Dorang needs.
Lets see the taxes I pay that are NOT property taxes.
Boro Income tax
County Income Tax
State Income Tax
Federal Income Tax
School District Tax
Sales Tax
Cell Phone Use Tax
Gas Tax
Tax on Electricity
Tax on water and sewage
Regional Asset District Tax
Local Services Tax
And there are DOZENS of others I can name on top of these that are not property taxes.
So, you trying to tell me that the Fire Department (which is volunteer by the way, not government provided) won’t service my kitchen fire if I don’t pay property taxes as well?
Be serious, police and fire are are hardly anywhere near what the majority of what your your property taxes are going to.
