That’s possible. The article (or another I read) raised the possibility of it being two litters from different moms, but they’re considering them quints unless at some point in time DNA samples prove otherwise.

These stats are for black bears.
CUB SURVIVAL IN LITTERS OF 1,2 3, OR 4. Says 50% for a litter of 4. As someone else noted males are a big threat. Also, mom has to nurse them 5 or 6 months before they're weaned presuming there's adequate food sources. Often they nurse them for years.

That was only a 3 litter sample of 12 cubs. Overall the survival rate was near 80%
