What is a Love Bug?

A love bug is a nickname for a type of beetle commonly referred to as the ‘Plecia nearctica’ or ‘March Fly.’ These small insects are native to the southeastern United States and are most commonly found in Florida and other nearby states. Love bugs are known for their distinctive black-and-red coloring and for their incredibly dense swarms, which can be quite a nuisance for drivers. Though they don’t bite, sting, or cause any other harm, love bugs can be a nuisance due to their sheer numbers.

"And if you don’t wash them off the residue will eat your paint."

I just let the eastern exposure sun (block from the beach) and salt air take care of that. They seem to have it handled.

Bug zappers work. We keep one on the front porch during this time of years. Pounds of bugs get zapped.

That sounds like an Urban Myth. So I googled it. The best results say wax your car. Keep it waxed.

Pam is oil based. No one wants greasy oil collecting dirt all over the front of their car.

Not saying Pam is not good, just saying it’s not optimal.

When I was in college in Central Florida in 1971 I had a little Fiat with a very Square front end which had no Grill because it was a rear engine car. I did a lot of driving between work and school. During Love Bug season I just took Vaseline and smeared it all over the front of the car. Then once a week I would hose the bugs off. What was creepiest that a lot of them wouldn’t get squished when I hit them they would stick to the Vaseline and I get out of the car and they’d be all laying there squirming and stuff.

The windshield of course was a little more problematical. But being a rear engine car I didn’t have the problem with them clogging up the radiator fins. Which is a real problem. Some people buy these fine fabric screens that fit across the front of the car to cut down on the bugs getting to the radiator. It helps but what happens is the force of the bug heading the screen means that while the bug itself is stopped the guts are still pushed through and cause a buildup on the fins.

Pam is just for long trips on the Interstate, not everyday driving for the month they are swarming.

The bugs are very acidic and will pit your paint badly. I’d much rather have a oily film on the car that will wash off easily that have to get a new paint job.................

What’s the best thing to come out of Gainsville?

Answer:

Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug.

AFAIK, they don't eat anything either. They just exist to create messes on peoples cars and trucks and especially BIG RIGS..............

The best method to "remove" the bug-splatter is to use dryer sheets during your washing routine.

They'll wipe off with minimal effort!
