Autistic teen was tied down, taunted by cops while he begged for help before death, disturbing video shows

An autistic teen from Ohio was forcibly restrained, taunted and manhandled by police while he begged them for help days before he died from a head injury, footage has revealed.

Isaiah Trammell, 19, was arrested in the early hours of March 13, 2023, following a mental health episode, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

When authorities arrived at Trammell’s home in Lebanon, they found an outstanding warrant for a misdemeanor domestic violence offense, and took the teen into custody around 1 a.m., the outlet reported.

Over the next 10 hours, Trammell — who had autism spectrum disorder — was denied repeated requests for a phone call, his medication and even a blanket, troubling footage from inside the Montgomery County Jail revealed.

“Please let’s talk about this,” Trammell could be heard begging five sheriff’s deputies as they pinned him to the floor of his cell.

“No, there’s no talking,” one deputy snapped as they strapped him into a restraint chair.

Trammell was restrained twice during his jail stint — including one stretch for more than two hours, which is over the time limit set by Ohio law, the Dispatch noted.

Shortly after he was booked, Trammell told the deputies that he wanted to die, and he was placed on suicide watch with a harm-proof blanket in a cell by himself.

“He hated his body to be exposed and he kept telling them. He hated to be confined. Absolutely that would trigger him,” Trammell’s mom, Brandy Abner, told the Dispatch.

The buildup of stress saw Trammell start banging his head, the footage showed.

Head-banging is a common stim, or self-soothing behavior, in those with autism, the Dispatch explained. In the past, Trammell’s loved ones did their best to keep him physically safe while he worked through his emotions.

This is very sad. They should have taken the boy to a hospital with a mental ward. He needed help.

I don’t agree with handling of things after he was taken into custody, but if he had an outstanding warrant, then they had authority to take him in.

But here’s the thing. Cops can arrest you for all sorts of purely subjective things. Disorderly conduct and obstruction of justice are two common ones.

There are even videos of cops arresting people solely for resisting arrest. How is that even possible?

Are most cops like that? I don’t think so. But a significant percentage of them are, enough to cast a shadow on the whole profession.

I had a sheriff’s deputy in my hometown try to arrest me for disorderly conduct and drew his gun on me and his son’s best friend. The bastard also tried to intimidate me through my sister in front of my house. I registered a complain with the sheriff and had the deputy fired.

The problem is that the only modern police recruits are the bullies from high school who would set small animals on fire, and the brighter cops have been instilled with an "us vs Them" conviction. So they turn off their body cams, and cover for the thugs.

Misdemeanor domestic violence. I personally know somebody who had warrants out for the same charge. They finally caught up with him, arrested him, and put him in an ankle monitor until trial.

Just cause it says "misdemeanor" doesn't mean it isn't extremely serious, or even dangerous.

That said, we are absolutely NOT dealing with mental health in this country. Hospitals don't want them, cops don't know what to do with them, and judges put them back out on the street as fast as they come in.

They never have beds and don't want to hold people anymore. Our hospitals do whatever they need to do to get them out of their purview as quickly as possible. If he'd have been lucky, he'd have gotten pink-slipped for 72 hours. But he'd have been turned out the minute that time expired.

Agreed. But THIS one was for domestic violence which makes him an ongoing potential threat to whoever it was that he allegedly assaulted. He likely had the warrant because he wasn't able to be found at the time the complaint was taken. So the cops absolutely should make the arrest to help get to the bottom of the whole story.

If he was arrested in Lebanon he should have been in the Warren Co jail.
Go down to Memorial drive and look at the campus the county built.
Looks like a royal estate.
Should be a mental hospital right there with all the libs in Lebanon now.
Instead they have a little out treatment place that is the smallest building on the government campus.

Sounds like they need a good civil rights lawyer. I’ve seen a few on youboob who make a living on suing cops for this sort of thing.

The domestic violence can wait while he’s locked up in a Nervous Hospital. Trust me Nurse Ratched will make sure he’s not going anywhere. They should have taken him to a hospital first then jail.
