Wi-Fi jamming attacks are on the rise. How they affect your smart home security
TechHive ^ | MAY 8, 2024 | Robert Strohmeyer

With more than a third of North American homes protected by a video doorbell or some other Wi-Fi-dependent device, it’s reasonable to worry about the growing threat of Wi-Fi jammers. These mysterious devices can override your smart home security monitoring, effectively neutralizing the systems you’ve relied on for peace of mind.

Indeed, these increasingly cheap and accessible jamming devices make it easier than ever for criminals to block your security system’s primary communications signal.

for any use of a jamming device in the commission of a crime
= = =

Jerking a person’s phone line out of the wall, especially during domestic abuse was an additional criminal factor.

This sounds similar.

Or hickory-smoked. Or corn cob-smoked. We’re not picky.

It should be illegal to build, sell, or possess this as it has only one real purpose, committing crime.

If you are in a movie theater and some jackwagon won't shut up and is getting loud on his/her phone and ruining your movie experience, you may feel different.

No, what if I were that same theatre visitor and the theatre blocked a signal reporting the alarm at my home or a message asking for life-saving help from a relative? No, theatres should be prosecuted for illegal jammers, let them find other ways to address mobile devices.

Awhile back, someone put out a video on Tiktok about how to steal Kia and Hyundai cars, immediately afterwards, there was a huge spike in those models getting stolen.

That had NOTHING to do with wi-fi or the fob. These cars were being hotwired with a simple USB end because these vehicles didn't have proper ignition protection and it was only the vehicles using keys. The key Fob vehicles were fine and relatively safe.

The point I was trying to make is that modern conveniences with all the electronics can and are easily compromised.

In this case a simple video on TikTok led to a spike Kia and Hyundai cars getting stolen.

It doesn’t take a computer scientist to steal or compromise very expensive cars and devices and it can be done for very simple devices that cost very little money.

While it is not going to happen, consumers should be offered the option of automobiles with LESS technology.

Doors that only open or unlock with a physical key

Cars that only start with physical key

Cars without $4K in “driver assist” features. My nephew bought a new Toyota last week and paid an extra $2K for a longer warranty on the polyglot of electronic driver assistance features because they are so expensive to fix.....when they can be fixed.

My daughter was researching new cars recently and said that even though she had the money, she couldn’t find a decent car that was not way over featured. She decided to keep repairing her 2006 Sonata. Ditto for me and my 2004 and 2007 Sonatas.

She recently had to do CVJ’s and a new set of tires. The same or less than 2 car payments. I need struts and shocks on my 2007. Same thing.

I ride an Indian Scout. Stick the key in and turn it. It’s surprising in the Indian forums how many Scout owners are retro fitting electronic key FOBS. No thank you. A friend has a bagger stock with electronic FOBs. He recently had an extended and frustrating period of multiple trips to the dealer who was unable to diagnose a starting problem. *Eventually* they figured out the receiving unit for the key was on the blink.

Correct, cameras themselves don’t protect anything. However, the Ring systems, and similar security systems, are useful.

They usually contain proximity alerts and can ping your smartphone with video if someone approaches, not just if someone rings your doorbell. Especially useful if you’re upstairs or in the basement and someone is prowling around your house.

I was in the computer tech support for 38 years and I’m not really into electronic conveniences, we had to purchase a new dishwasher recently, browsing the appliances at Lowe’s just about every appliance had a few models that were “smart device”, IMO they nothing more than open gateways for electronic intruders.

My experience as well. If my vehicle gets totaled I'll find a good used old car.

Same here. Wireless is inherently insecure.

Do not have home Wi-Fi. Wired connection only.

This is elementary security always, and not just a response to this or that latest threat.

Likewise, say no to smart phones.

Mine is land line intruder trip ring to mobile and 14 mile walkie talkie intruder trip...plus listen in on both...don’t need a Wi-Fi camera...just use regular hidden camera with intruder trip
For a video /sound recording

I have always believed, since the day James Bond premiered, that the more we all become James Bond, the more that littlepeabrain SPECTRE, finds a way to annoy us!

Remember the creeps who wormed their way into a home through the smart-run fish tank equipment?

I choose old school, my finger on the knob stuff.
