The rich are not like the rest of us. Whether that adage is true or not, it is becoming increasingly clear that leftists do not think as we do. They are not like the rest of us.
I am reminded of the very nice lady who brought her billing statement to our office, insisting that there was an error. She could not possibly owe anything, she said. At first, I thought she might be right, so I went over the entire record of the account with her, line by line. After each item, she agreed that the running total was correct. It was basic arithmetic: charges minus payments. When we got to the final balance, she agreed that the math was correct, but she still insisted that she could not possibly owe the balance due. Even when I asked her to show me the error, which she could not, she remained adamant that there must be a mistake — somewhere.
It was then that I understood the reality of the situation. The nice lady had never been persuadable from the beginning. Facts meant nothing to her. The only thing that meant anything to her was her “feeling.” The stated balance due just did not feel right to her, end of discussion.
When internet discussions became a popular activity in the late 1990s, I had my first in-depth discussions and debates with leftists. It was there that I discovered that there were people who could not fathom why conservatives (such as myself) hold the beliefs we do. How, they would ask, could anyone possibly be so coldhearted as to approve of the death penalty for convicted murderers, who had been afforded every right to defend themselves? But they could not see their hypocrisy in putting to death an innocent fetal child...

I go onto Facebook and even have the pleasure of family gatherings to read and listen to leftist talking points and often I get the idea that these people use the same alphabet and words but speak an entirely different language.
A major difference between a great number of leftists and conservatives exists in their assumptions about the nature of reality.
One assumption by most leftists is "people are basically good". It is the culture which has taught them to be evil.
Most conservatives believe children are wild animals which must be taught to do the right thing. Culture and tradition and religion are how we teach them to do the right thing.
I don’t bother. No one is changing anyone’s mind.
If a leftist "feels" you must be wrong, you are wrong. No amount of facts, no documents, no empirical evidence will ever convince them you are wrong and they are right, because they feel it must be so.
Never argue with an idiot, they take you down to their level and beat you with experience.
This comes to mind often in online debates.

Actually, I don’t think this is the right take. Some of the most die-hard leftists I’ve known were very smart, mentally sharp, educated people. They were not stupid. They were arrogant and certain they were always right. They were narrow-minded and didn’t want to legitimately consider contrary viewpoints and evidence. And they were often heavily indoctrinated in left-wing schools and watched and read left-wing media.
The problems weren’t that they were dumb, but that they were indoctrinated, closed-minded, and taught to see themselves as superior and always correct. I’ve certainly seen a lot of Dem voters who were dumb as a box of bricks, but they tended to be voters who barely paid any attention to politics, not the true believers on the left. These people can at least sometimes be reached by simply showing them evidence and arguments they’ve never heard before. The die-hards, on the other hand, often have to face something that shatters their entire worldview before considering other positions.
But through indictments, trials, convictions, and sentencing you can fix those Demonicrats who give aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States.
