Are those still available?

They're all over the place. Just google "Heemeyer welding and demolition"

There's a bunch of different variants.

Wow. 20 years ago. Where have all of those freepers gone? I was just a lurker back then.

It's good to see that from that thread in 2004 that Travis McGee, datura, Fester Chugabrew, AAABEST, Alberta's Child and wardaddy are still posting on FR.

I go through Granby every year .
It’s between Grand Lake and Winter Park.
This guy has been made out to be a victim of government and being pushed too far.
That’s not true when you read about what happened .
He was a thin skinned nut job and was angry he wasn’t friends with long term residents of the area.
He felt dissed and wanted to destroy what people had built

One of my favorite sf and fantasy writers of all. I lived not too far from him in Oregon for years, but could never bring myself to intrude.

I have the 13-volume collected short fiction. Maybe I’ll dig it out and read me some Sturgeon again before long.

That's not true. Marvin made the mistake of buying a piece of property at auction, not knowing he was bidding against the guy who previously owned and lost it in foreclosure. The guy had friends in politics and they conspired to screw with him, including fining him daily for not connecting to the municipal sewage when there was no reason to.

Marvin went out of his way to only damage the property of those who screwed with him.

One of the most memorable opening lines in an epic novel based on a real-life story. LOL.

It was just another Friday afternoon in Granby, Colorado when Marvin Hemeyer (sp?) pulled into town with his newly armored Caterpiller D5. The citizens of Granby acknowledged with gratitude his thoughtfulness in waiting for businesses to close before he began to doze.

Read the story by Theodore Sturgeon at about age 12, then saw the movie when it aired. It was made for tv. The story was published in 1944. a tight story.

“From the people whose livelihoods were destroyed by Heemeyer to those who loved Heemeyer the most and continue to support him,” Solet said.

People are idiots.

I remember a video clip of another incident where a guy got hold of a tank and drove through a town side swiping cars and peeling them open like a piece of aluminum foil.

Oh, my. The memories of this are rich. Every so often there is a story that defies history. I must have a warped sense of humor, because this one still makes me laugh.
