A molecular biologist says she was prevented from buying the Virginia Beach condo of her dreams after the white owner learned that she was black, it is alleged.
Dr. Raven Baxter, 30, was prepared to buy the home after a virtual tour of the property. It had everything she wanted: a private foyer, wainscoting, exquisite crown molding, and a marble fireplace.
Baxter offered the asking price, $749,000, which was promptly accepted by the seller. The molecular biologist, who works remotely for Mt. Sinai hospital, then sent over a down payment and the condo went into escrow.
But then she received a call late at night from her broker, who told her that the seller, Jane Walker, 84, now wanted to back out of the deal.
'He said, "I don’t know how to tell you this, but she doesn’t want to sell the home to you, and it’s because you’re black,"' Baxter recalled.
Earlier that day, the biological scientist and her long-time boyfriend, Dr. Ronald Gamble Jr., a theoretical physicist who works for NASA, made the three-hour drive to the condo from their apartment in Alexandria, Va.
For the first time, the two scientists explored the property in person.
When Baxter had previously toured the condo virtually, her camera had been off. Jane Walker, the seller, was unaware of her race.
After concluding their inspection of the property, which is near the beach and features a view of the Atlantic, they bumped into the seller.
As the couple prepared to leave, Walker appeared and her agent, Susan Pender of Berkshire Hathaway RW Towne Realty, introduced the two parties.
Moments after the scientists left, Baxter said Walker confronted her agent, telling her that she was not willing to sell her condo to a black person. Walker ordered Pender to terminate the sale.

Looks like Jane might have reached the point where her loved ones need to step in and protect her from herself. A bit late in the game to be pulling that stunt. And showing a lack of mental capacity in giving the real reason.
Unless the seller has a raging case of dementia, this did not happen.
Ok, maybe a shakedown. I do know there are bad apples in the business, and agents who would participate in that kind of scheme, for a kickback. Ditto lawyers.

My guess is that the front door opens to the outside instead of a common hallway.
It appears from the excerpt that the broker said it was due to the buyer being black. I guess I’ll have to go read the entire article to find out if there is any actual evidence that race was the reason for the seller backing out of the deal. The accusations could be a scheme cooked up between the buyer and broker and the truth is no where close to the actual accusations.
How does a molecular biologist work remotely?
I think this is a BS story with terms in the first few sentences “black…believed…alleged…white…”

I agree 100%. I didn’t go to the article in the beginning so I didn’t see the picture. It’s certainly not a CONDO.....Why on earth would it be billed as such? Why would ANYONE call it a condo?

Have to admit that not much makes sense in this article - starting with calling it a “condo”. Has the writer or seller or realtor or buyer ever seen a condo?
I’ve lived in a condo and we had a front door all to ourselves direct into the living room as did all the others in the row of condos!
Truthfully, I know the difference between a mega mansion and a condo but I don’t know the difference between a condo and a townhouse!

JOE BIDEN! For some reason white racists are very confident Joe Biden's police forces will not come after them. They must know of Joe Biden's shaky past on race relations and Joe Biden's legislative record of imprisoning people for doing drugs while black.
Voters should be aware if they elect Joe Biden as president black people will be targeted even more - and perhaps replaced all together by illegal immigrants.
