Three passengers are suing American Airlines after alleging employees from the company removed a total of eight Black men from a flight due to a complaint about a passenger with body odor.
The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, claims that as American Airlines Flight 832 from Phoenix to New York was boarding in January, American Airlines employees removed eight Black men from the plane allegedly over a complaint about "offensive body odor."
Video central to the lawsuit displayed a group of Black men who were not traveling together and did not know each other being removed from the flight. According to the suit, they were the only Black passengers on the flight.
Emmanuel Jean Joseph, Alvin Jackson and Xavier Veal — the three plaintiffs— were on a connecting flight from Los Angeles. The three allege that at no point throughout the other flight did any employee from American Airlines say anything to them about an offensive odor.
Jean Joseph told CBS News senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave that as he gathered his belongings and walked to the jet bridge, he noticed that only Black men were being removed from the flight.

American Airlines should sue them because they’ll never get the smell out like the Seinfeld episode with the body order , The Smelly Car
Take a shower ?
I was on a commuter flight from Chicago last year. It was packed.
A young black man sat down in my row and stunk to high heaven with pot. The skunk smell was obnoxious. My SO gets a severe migraine from smell.
If these men were smoking pot and they stank, yeah, kick them off.
Some people have horrible body odor and it isn’t from pot smoking.
I knew a guy that every time he got in someone’s car, the other people in that car wanted to puke.
There are plenty of products out there, including a nice hot shower to keep a person from stinking.
I fly about once a year. I dread going on flights. And the more I read, the more I experience, the more I contemplate driving. Although I hate driving long distances.
Indeed, my BS meter is spiking
the CBS News (and their lawyer’s) narrative is: Plane had a strong oder of B.O., so Airline staff removed all the black men, harassed them for an hour, then let them back on the same flight.
OK, sure.
Mando is the Lume version for men.
My local bar hired a black bartender last year. He’d come in reeking of pot, start playing rap on the jukebox, and start singing along. He didn’t last long.
I once had a customer like that. Had to sit in meetings with him regularly, take him to dinner, etc... Very heavy guy, wheezed when he talked, sloppy dresser, stank of terrible BO. He presented himself as the owner, which puzzled me.
I learned later he was only a minor partner, and other partners eventually succeeded in buying him out / getting rid of him, for other issues besides just the B.O. Never fully understood why he was allowed to have a "public-facing" job, even if he was a relative of the company founder.
I often can smell pot, coming from other cars around me - while driving 40 mph down our local 4 lane commercial highway, which is full of cars.
It must be super-potent stuff for the smell to carry like that.
My best guess is that at least a couple of them stunk to high heavens. It is quite possible they planned on smelling horrid just to get rich suing the airlines.
I can’t blame anyone that is stuck in a tube 38,000 feet in the air for hours with a bunch of skunks for wanting them removed.
Yes, in our area we have a lot of people who smoke marijuana that smells at least as bad as a skunk. We typically encounter them at the grocery store; at least we can usually get away from them.
Perhaps. But, if these guys stunk so bad how was AA going to book them on other flights? And why did they let them back on?
If they stunk they should have been removed and told to come back after cleaning up.
White, black, male or female - I can smell dreadlocks a mile away! It’s usually a combination of grease, dust, and pot resin odors. Disgusting. I would hate to be trapped on a flight with that.
Reporters refused to fly on Obama’s campaign plane because it was dirty and smelled so bad.
I used to fly to Huntsville, Alabama for business, and often the plane had many German expats who worked at Redstone Arsenal or NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. The Germans had not yet discovered soap and deodorant, and the planes would stink to the stratosphere.
I threw up in a barf bag while sitting next to a 300 lb hogger who made grunting sounds every few minutes. She smelled like bad tuna. I was never the same.
