10% seems cheap. It might never have been found without this woman.

Depending on your State, they may be subject to the 50-year old antiquities rule, and are to be left undisturbed.

I’d like to know how the person came across the coins. Out walking doesn’t give us any details...and I did READ the article - believe it or not! Wonder why it wasn’t reported as part of the story/find...
To: Red Badger
Should have been released in drabs and dribbles through a cut out third part direct to dealers. The museum will take them because the government will take it all. She’s lucky they don’t tax her for the amount.
To: Red Badger
People, if you find something of value keep your mouth shut. The government will either seize it or tax it.

I found a 2 mill Colorado sales tax token from around WW2 on my property and a bunch of zinc coated nails.

Yes. Seems they would not be laying out in the sun just waiting to be found, or were they? Recent rains?

They were originally in a ceramic pot, of which only the base was left.
Presumably, the rest of the pot had broken into pieces and carried away by plows and erosion as this field was plowed many times over the last 900 years.................

It may have been plowed up, rain could have cleaned it off to where it stood out, etc.

Yes, I have an ‘El Cheapo’ model that I take to parks and the beach.
Find lots of change, and junk, but never anything valuable............

Definitely. It should be the reverse. Under English treasure law, if unique or special the crown keeps, but finder and landowner split full market value. If common/known, you can keep. A friend has the small bronze eagle from the top of a Roman war standard from there.

The law is 100 years, and bullets, coins, are exempt. Some places try to squeeze the age down, but that’s bureaucratic of local official personal edict.
