Dog owner who paid for sick pup to be put down shocked to find he’s now healthy — and up for adoption

A woman was shocked to discover that the sick dog she took to be euthanized was back at the shelter and up for adoption a year later.

Kristie Pereira, 32, was heartbroken when she was told that the most humane thing she could do for her beloved pet Beau was to put him down.

The digital marketer said she paid $450 to adopt her pup from the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation in 2022 while working from home in Maryland.

The dog’s veterinarian, the clinic’s lead doctor and an animal emergency room vet eventually all agreed that the poop pup’s symptoms pointed to a severe neurological problem, Pereira said.

Running out of viable options, Pereira said she was told that euthanizing the puppy would be the best solution.

In late March of 2023, Pereira said she took Beau to Montgomery County Animal Services in Derwood, Maryland, where she paid $15 for him to be euthanized. She was told that the shelter’s policy does not allow pet owners to stay in the room with their pets as they are put down, so she said goodbye to Beau and walked out of the office.

About a year after the heartbreaking situation, Pereira, who has since moved to San Antonio, considered getting another dog and decided to take a peek at the rescue’s website when she was back home visiting family in Maryland.

She was shocked earlier this month when she spotted a dog who looked identical to Beau — just a bit bigger — with the same name he had been given at the shelter when she first fell in love with him in 2022.

we don’t know the whole story
I pulled time in a vet clinic
not all folks are thoughtful of their pets
many folks are too stupid or selfish to have custody of a pet

That’s true.

But where’s the informed consent in this case?

If what she is alleging is true, that vet needs to be hauled in front of a review board.

Many folks don’t have thousands of dollars to spend saving their beloved pet.

Some folks might realize that it might be kinder to euthanize a pet you can longer care for, and that because of its age and/or medical issues will never stand a chance of being adopted and won’t get decent care at a shelter.

I have come to the realization the last few years that there’s a Big Vet to go along with Big Med.

And ethical veterinary practioners, especially in corporate owned practices, are as hard to find as a decent doc in a human health system.

Our family dog died at the age of 17. He was never sick day of his life and just didn’t wake up one morning. My Dad took him to the local animal hospital/cemetery to be buried and insisted on being with him right up until he was interred. He was worried that they would do an autopsy because he had lived such a long and healthy life. He’s buried next to Nixon’s dog, Checkers.

I understand and agree.
Most of the clinics are corporate these days - the care is not there. Fortunately there are a few old school vets in our county.
And my earlier remark was inspired by a local case in which the owner was vegan and thought the dog should be vegan also.

Most of the pet rescues are a racket.

And there is no way in hell is anyone going to stop me from being with one of my animals when the time comes.

“She was told that the shelter’s policy does not allow pet owners to stay in the room with their pets as they are put down”
____

You hit the nail on the head, so to speak/type.

If I read the article correctly, she was even told by the pet rescue organization that if she was not going to stay in the room when it was put down it might be adopted back by them and she would NOT be allowed to get the puppy back.

This was when she was in the process of adopting the puppy.

She didn’t follow through on what they told her could be an issue.

Emotionally she’s hooked and maybe her pride is really damaged.

That said, I wouldn’t let her adopt the dog.

Not saying they don’t serve a purpose and a need, but the ones I’m familiar with are scam ripoffs focusing on how much they can charge for adoption fees.
