A woman was shocked to discover that the sick dog she took to be euthanized was back at the shelter and up for adoption a year later.
Kristie Pereira, 32, was heartbroken when she was told that the most humane thing she could do for her beloved pet Beau was to put him down.
The digital marketer said she paid $450 to adopt her pup from the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation in 2022 while working from home in Maryland.
The dog’s veterinarian, the clinic’s lead doctor and an animal emergency room vet eventually all agreed that the poop pup’s symptoms pointed to a severe neurological problem, Pereira said.
Running out of viable options, Pereira said she was told that euthanizing the puppy would be the best solution.
In late March of 2023, Pereira said she took Beau to Montgomery County Animal Services in Derwood, Maryland, where she paid $15 for him to be euthanized. She was told that the shelter’s policy does not allow pet owners to stay in the room with their pets as they are put down, so she said goodbye to Beau and walked out of the office.
About a year after the heartbreaking situation, Pereira, who has since moved to San Antonio, considered getting another dog and decided to take a peek at the rescue’s website when she was back home visiting family in Maryland.
She was shocked earlier this month when she spotted a dog who looked identical to Beau — just a bit bigger — with the same name he had been given at the shelter when she first fell in love with him in 2022.

I never trusted the doctor who told me to put our dog down, but I never thought something like this.

Sometimes the injuries or illness are so severe the client cannot pay for exploratory efforts and repeated efforts just to see if recovery is possible. In that instance, it is likely best to suggest euthanizing the dog. Then,if the vet decides to try new techniques or take risks and board the dog for free over repeated efforts to see if there is any benefit or cure, the dog can be put up for adoption. Curing the dog or repairing injury is sometimes done by vets who basically have the clinic adopt the dog. Then if recovered, the dog is adopted and the fee goes to compensate the treatments and boarding, which sometimes takes months. I don’t think a vet would ‘swindle’ an owner out of a dog for $450 when all they have to do is clean the teeth of client’s dogs. Bad example I know - but vets can earn that kind of money without restoring a very ill dog to health.
She spotted her dog on the shelter’s site and called them. She wants to adopt him again. They will not allow it and were rather rude to her about it.
The shelter still refuses to give the woman her dog.
The shelter workers and the vets involved in this scam should all do hard time and lose their licenses.
I wonder what would happen if a family member of friend called to adopt the dog.
Should’ve taken the pup to a Kristi Noem veterinarian center.

Many people euthanize too readily
If they thought she was unwilling to pay for advanced treatment or even what they consider ‘normal’ expected treatment, and put him up for euthanasia, they might be hostile to her in some sense, but it’s unprofessional for them to show it. They have to explain themselves if they want to be taken seriously.
I took a dying bird to a vet -f or some reason my pet bird appeared to be feeding all her chicks when in fact she’d begun to neglect one, and I didn’t catch it. When the little guy flung himself out of the nest box, I took him to the vet because he seemed to have hurt his leg. I learned that he was not being fed and threw himself out of the nest box to try to feed himself, but he was too young and so he aspirated a seed.
The vet accosted me by accusing me of manually feeding the bird wrong with a syringe (a get rich quick scheme some people use - raising birds by hand to make money). I explained the mother was feeding all and all seemed to be going well, with cheaping before mom fed them and quiet sleeping birds after she left. I didn’t know she was rejecting one. Vet acted like I was lying - I patiently explained a few times and slowly her shoulders lowered. She was angry in the belief that an animal was being abused. It was unprofessional of her, and I really was offended because I don’t hurt animals, I was crushed that the little guy was hurt and would die, and was at the vet for hundreds of dollars for a chick that was weeks old.
So the vet/techs may have been protective of a dog they thought should have been given advanced treatments. MAY have been.
They do tend to judge sometimes - if the owner doesn’t have the money, trying to shame them for being bad pet owners won’t create the needed funds. SOmetimes it’s carelessness or cheapness on the part of the owner, and sometimes it’s reality for a loving pet owner- would the vet like to do the surgery/treatments for animals and just not get paid?
I do find fault with vet staff sometimes, but I see sometimes that in some cases they fly off the handle in defense of an animal. I’ve seen videos on YOUTUBE where the narration is, “When the dog’s owner was unable to afford treatments, he surrendered the dog. The vet and staff treated the dog over the next 6 weeks and were overjoyed when the dog finally recovered.” Now if the owner wants to adopt, then the question should be handled professionally “We treated him X times for X weeks and spent X for boarding and care....” but the owner still wouldn’t be able to pay, right?
To get around it, the owner could have a friend adopt the dog on her/his behalf and voila - weeks of weeks of intensive veterinary care for free.
I don’t think there’s enough info in the story for me to know who was wrong/unprofessional. I wouldn’t expect the vet to expose anything about the client’s ability to pay (boy, THAT would be wrong) so we may only get part of the story.
What of the wrongs of emotionally telling pet owner best to euthanize and taking their money for euthanization but then not doingthat?
Lies and cheating, stealing and reselling.
Any time we had to put an animal down the vet gave them shots as we stayed with animal.
Someone needs to investigate this guy...
I’m finding over the past few months that the cat dog lost or homeless cat dog industry can be a moneymaker for these ruthless people.
The homeless situation for animals really sucks yeah we keep on producing cats and dogs and the shelters full of them. If you have room in your house consider adopting right now the kittens are overflowing..
It’s not for everyone having a pet in the home It is a big responsibility for some for many years 20+ years the rewards I have no words for that.
I’ve come to trust vets less and less. The rip-off on heartworm meds is but on reason. I stopped buying the pills from the vet when I found I could just buy Ivermectin from a supply house, allowing me to go from spending $30 per month, to $25 per year. I now reject the heartworm test as well. Why test if my dogs are on Ivermectin?

That's when I would have taken the dog elsewhere for a second opinion. A good vet respects the bonds between animals and their masters. Best vet I never had was when I lived in Louisiana. I had a shepherd I rescued after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In the spring of 2017 he had a stroke and his right side was paralyzed and he couldn't even pick his head up to eat or drink. I saw the doc get misty eyed when we decided to put him to sleep and I was cradling my dog's head when the deed was done. The doc let me be alone with him in the room as long as I wanted after that.
