As MLB changes its records, Josh Gibson, not Ty Cobb, is all-time batting leader
The Athletic NYT ^ | 5/28/24 | Tyler Kepner

Posted on 05/28/2024 8:29:55 PM PDT by Round Earther

It has been an article of faith for nearly a century, as if chiseled onto a tablet by Abner Doubleday himself: The leading hitter in major league history is, and always will be, Tyrus Raymond Cobb.

But history evolves. We know that Doubleday did not, in fact, invent baseball. And as of Wednesday, Josh Gibson will replace Cobb as the leading hitter in the official records of the game. At .372, Gibson’s career batting average eclipses Cobb’s by six points.

Exactly

You have to strip whites of history and any pride
It’s imperative to achieve the goal
Same as killing the family and sexual definitions and stripping Christianity of any place

And some here are too stupid to see it

So you are saying Gibson got to hit against much greater pitching his entire career.

Did he also take a break and relax in the Army for a couple of years?

I’m guessing it would now be fair to award LeBron all of the WNBA records too.

If you never heard of Josh Gibson you're not a baseball fan.

Great hitter in the Negro Leagues.

So, if you are not aware of stats from negro league baseball from 80 to 100 years ago... you can't be a baseball fan? Did American soldiers in WWII ask Negro League questions to Germans posing as American soldiers during the Battle of the Bulge? Sounds like the same brilliant reasoning used by Joe Biden.

Josh Gibson was a beast. But the statistical records from the Negro Leagues were not up to the same standards of that of MLB, and they were incongruent systems as far as scheduling, and level of play.

This is ridiculous.

Why don't they just knock down all the baseball statues while they're at it? None of them are safe now that revisionists are at it anyway. Negro baseball leagues didn't have as high of standards as MLB in both Officiating and stat keeping. But now they want to take it as a leap of faith that a negro must have been better than a white player even in the face of dubious, suspect stat keeping and play calling by under qualified umps and stat keepers.

“I’m fine with amalgamating the Negro leagues with the professional league baseball. That seems reasonable to me.”

I’m okay with it. Many of the Negro League players were as good, it not better than Jackie Robinson.

As long as the records can be verified in some way, seems fine.

Major League Baseball (MLB) will not be a true DEI warrior until it also includes the records of all professional baseball leagues, past and present:

Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB)
Korean Baseball Organization (KBO)
Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM)
Mexican Baseball League (LMB)
Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP)
Australian Baseball League (ABL)
Cuban National Series Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL)
European Association of Professional Baseball (EAPB)
The Italian Baseball League (Serie A)

Until then MLB will continue to a racist organization. < /sarcasm>

They are just adding players who were phenomenal at the time. History is history whether you like it or not.

Doubtful Gibson could have hit .372 had he been allowed to play MLB. That’s something we’ll never know and because of that, he should not have been elevated above Cobb. Just more virtue signaling.

Satchel Paige's statistics.

Seems like it is considered to be major league quality.
